After a brief post on Silk's map I figured this was a good idea to throw out there. I often get asked by noob players where refs are specially on some maps where the locations arent as visable on the minimap or when the generally accepted 'smoking rock' isnt used as the res point model.

+ Minimap ref points as seperate graphics. Much like players and buildings are on the minimap.

    Pros:

    • Standardized graphics for res points on all maps
    • Easier for new players to find the location of the res point
    • Easier for new players to identify what the res point is regaurdless of different model changes on different maps

    Cons:

    • Depending on how its implemented may be difficult for mappers to designate which refs give more resources

10-12 sprites locations on a minimap are not going to be a problem, take the second con off.

This is fine with me, I support you.

I have flags which give resources, make it so that they are indicated too, possibly with a yellow outline.

I wonder why refinery icons are not automatically placed on the minimap. Because flags are.

On standart maps it would save the mapper only some seconds but it would alow alot more flexible and creative use of ref nodes on maps :)

Minimaps are a pain enough as it is to make. Let the mappers just take a screen and be done.

Putting a dot on the image is hardly difficult.

    Why?

I know exactly where all the refineries are in my map, what on earth is difficult about painting a dot over them?

If needs be you can compile the map with bright yellow cylinders over the refinery locations if you're too lazy to use paint.

its like having a file cabinet, doing all the sorting by yourself

or having a computer with a database, the second one is better in every field, but only requires a little bit more money to set up

but it does look professional and such

besides, i have had the problem with minimaps that if i take a print screen of my minimap everything that is heightened will arc out to the edges of the map due to the perspective being in the center (me looking down)
anyone know how to fix it? because it makes the flags and ref nodes not align properly to the fact that i wanted to use a self drawn minimap on the base fo how hammer represents it in the 2d top down view and then just color it in as a blueprint

Using an in-map setting for refinery locations allows you to tell players when they're on/off, and change their res/s rate, and tell them that. The current system is the ineffective one.
