For those of you who don't know, Raspberry Pi

For those of you interested but too lazy to look, it's a $35(£22) computer with a 700Mhz processor, 256MB of RAM, supports up to 1080p display and uses an SD Card for storage. Supports Ethernet, HDMI, Composite, 2xUSB, 3.5mm TRS and Wi-Fi. It's also only 8.5 x 5.5 centimeters and runs off 2.5W of power at 5V.

Why is it so awesome? Well, that's because you can fit this thing in your pocket and power it with four AA batteries. Switch out all the data in it just by switching out the SD card. Plug it into damn near anything with the proper adapter.

So I know I'm getting one. Anyone else going to get one to see what they can do with it? I already have a few good ideas on what I could use it for.

Well, you CAN run it off a 5V MicroUSB power supply.

    But that's boring.

I'm going to make my own power supply for it. I'm aiming for a transformer with 1:14 or 1:10 to get eight or ten volts out of it, have a regulator reduce it from there, an electrolytic cap or two to condition it from pulsed to continuous DC, a ceramic cap to balance out the minute fluctuations and end it off with a resistor or two to cut the current down to a nice 500mA or so. I can make it fairly small; I have the right parts lying around and the tools to make circuit boards.

this sounds like a nice firewall/torrent box. Put puppy in it and your set.

edit: wait... the thing has no clock? hmm well I guess you can emulate one.

btw candles... you need 700 mA (3.5 W) not 500 for the one with 256MiB ram.

Now they just need to make a £16 monitor that can also run off batteries.

you could write an app for a smartphone and control it via wifi, you dont need a monitor ...

    Necro alert:
Check it out! They are actually shipping now. Final specs look great too.
cant wait to see what the next board design looks like.

I'm not buying one until I can get a case for it, exposed circuitry will not last long around me.
