When i start up Empires from steam, the loading screen goes white , and on top it says " video not available, cannot find 'vids:cvid' compressor " and it plays a sound file, sounding like something exploding.

Is this normal with everyone, or am i missing a file, or is this file still in the process of being created?

It sounds like you are missing a codec.

Do you need DivX or something for it?

Do the valve startup videos for HL2 work? As a temporary fix you can start the game with "-novid" to disable the video entirely. You may need to install the DivX and/or Cinepak codecs.

I prefer the K-Lite codec pack myself, but that's because I'm a nut and don't have the time/bandwidth to compare every effing codec pack out there.

K-Lite Codec pack screws up game movies for me.
    GTA 3 series for example.
    I use CCCP.

Just install them when you need it and dont install 50+ codecs and end up not needing 30 of them...
