they are going to be used to fly aircraft in Also x16 basically means the maps dont get bigger but the models in it are getting 16 times smaller (effectively making the mappable dimensions 4096 times bigger)
Would it not be difficult to shoot down tiny aircraft? or does everything shrink to give the illusion of gigantism?
To the player everything will look the same, aside from the fact that the map size is bigger. To a mapper it means that you can put less objects in the map and have to be careful with textures. There are already games that use this. For example in Unreal 2 a player is 128 units tall, but in Rainbow Six: Raven Shield, which uses the same engine, it's 256 units (but don't ask me why). You won't have to fear that you accidentally step on a 25 cm boom tank.
Another noob question - will all current maps have to be converted to 16x or will there be some sort of auto-scale?
If I remember correctly mappers will have an option for selecting the amount of scaling done to the map.
Source has a technique called a 3d skybox. It basically means you build something in 1/16th scale, and the game blows it up 16 times and projects it around the map. This is why in some maps you'll find a small room full of miniature stuff if you noclip outside the map, it's useful because you can create seemingly huge spaces by building them in really low scale, as hammer can only handle about half a mile in every direction.
Just a thought... On the 16x maps are the tanks and art range or accuracy going to be changed? I can see on maps that size art being a bit useless. Every one would just go tanks or air.
The weapon speed and all that will be adjusted. The player will see no difference in gameplay, just the map is 16X bigger.
Then I guess players start to whine cause some of their team members want sleep after 40 Hours of Mega Escort
good idea, saves from having to load more polys. same .bsp size, but is bigger. lol, a tiny tank. id just laugh, a plane an inch long. and like 40 grenadiers tryin to shoot it down. lolz!
Tiny vechicles can crawl underneath walls and break the CV's tires Yeah, i got a new idea ! As a scout, you can blow up tires I got another idea ! I stop making new ideas Seriously, 16x maps seem perfect for me. But is really EVERYTHING scaled down for the size of the map, including the players themselves ?
Well, all brushes and models, including the player, yes. I'm not sure but i don't think effects like fog and dust can be scaled down, i'm not sure how that will work.
