Hey yall, just wanted to share some WIP stuff I got going for the next version of empires. I've got some pretty good performance boosts with the new system I'm using and I'd like to hear some of your performance reports with this new stuff.

So without much ado heres the wips: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/516743/pokemons/particle_test.rar

Extract it to your empires/particles folder, create it if it's not there. Back up the folder first!

Tell me how well it runs, whats good, whats bad, what looks nice what looks terrible etc. Hopefully this batch is good, I look forward to your input as usual :)

Im looking at it now. The new particles for new objects dropped is cool The new building smoke is cool.

Are all bullets fired supposed to shoot in your face too? I see the splash on the ground and at the muzzle its rather... distracting.

Standard canon looks cool... even the little red chunks that get fired out. one thing I just noticed... there are no bullet tracers. and the splashing that happens at the end of the MG is even worse in a afv or apc.

Do you think the muzzleflashes are a bit too large?

    Read my updated post.

Plus that is all I can test with my testpires... what ever they did in the newer version I can NOT modify my tanks. It keeps switching to default when I build... which has nothing in it. I customize a medium with what I want... and then hit next... it shows me a medium with nothing on it.

Yes, the muzzle flashes seems... overly flashy. An epilepsy warning is needed.

We applied an update about 2 weeks ago to fix that problem with not being able to customise, so I don't know why you'd still have that problem.

Well have you tried it? Im not patronizing but, I mean have you personally tried it? It was kinda pissing me off. Maybe I am the only one with it left. My Testpires did do an update before I played it.

I dont know if I messed something up or is it intended that most particles are just small sparks and for example the nuke is a strange ball with alot of dots.

I just copied the files over into my particle folder.

The muzzle flash is so big that i cant use a gun properly with it the whole screen turns yellow. Enemys that shot at my at close range appear as a floating yellow ball cause of how huge the effect is.

I told you it was fixed a couple of weeks ago, did you restart your steam/update SVN to make sure it was fixed?

I told steam to verify the testpires... other then that, how do I force an update to it other then a complete redownload without using svn? It seems to me that the testpires doesn't have the update that SVN does. PS the reason I say without SVN is because even though I have SVN installed I can't see the settings to set it up due to not having access.

That's odd because we updated the steam version FOR the test. Do you still have steam.cfg in there?

    you mean this one?
    Code:
    #
    # *********** (C) Copyright 2008 Valve, L.L.C. All rights reserved. ***********
    #
    # Steam Client SDK configuration-override file
    #
    # This file is read by the Steam engine. This file should be located
    # in the same folder as steam.exe
    #

    #
    # Use this value to specify the dot-notation IP address or hostname
    # of the Steam Content Server for development/test.
    # Use "127.0.0.1" to specify the primary NIC of current host.
    #
    # If you need to run multiple content servers, you can specify
    # multiple addresses on this line seperated by a space character
    # (e.g. "11.22.33.44 11.22.33.45")
    #
    SdkContentServerAdrs = "epic-empires.co.uk"

    #
    # Enable the manifest fingerprint check at cache startup.
    # In general, this should always be enabled if your client is connecting
    # to an SDK content server.
    #
    #ManifestFingerprintCheck = enable

    #
    # Tell Steam to only connect to your local CS when downloading
    #
    CacheServerSessions = 1
    Then yes I do.

And it's named steam.cfg? I have a few ideas I'll need to test out, but I think I might know an explanation.

yes its named steam.cfg otherwise I would not have been able to even have the testpires in the first place.

No, you could have quite easily downloaded it, then swapped back to play regular empires, then swapped back but forgot steam.cfg.

Although you don't really play Empires, so that's probably not going to happen anyway.

I guess he forgot the materials in the link cause all I get are weird particle spawns if I put it in my particle folder...

... but who knows empty, as usual, ignores people that critisize his stuff.
