Perhaps you downloaded a corrupt client installer?

Side note: Why do people post huge images that require horizontal scrolling to view? How hard is it to take 10 seconds in Paint.Net and resize it to something reasonable?

    So, Funny story

When I was implementing particle tracers, This happened to me. It was because the particle file wasn't being correctly loaded, but, I think I raged for a good 30 minutes in the private IRC channel about the complete lack of particle documentation on the valve wiki.

After a while, I finally asked in #hlcoders, and tonys was quick to point out that I had misspelled the .pcf (I typed in .pfc in the manifest). I felt like a total idiot.

Also, I think that a giant explosion of red X's is a tad much for a bad particle. You'd think that 1 x would suffice

One for each particle? sounds good.

But yeah, I hear the Valve Documentation started out good, but it's become giant and ugly and impossible to navigate now with all the extra calls and stuff that people have added in.

I found the documentation sporadic but perfectly functional where it existed.

That and it isn't really that hard to figure out how to use it yourself.

Yeah, I made the chaingun into a flamethrower, ugly as piss and laggy too so that got deleted.

Worked on muzzleflashes for a while, made some fairly unique ones for each side as proof of concept (you can see the BE one a page back)

The NF one was just a bright red flash with lots of smoke. It was a pretty cool difference, but it was very over the top and cartoony.
