ive been thinking of getting into modeling, after looking at some pretty shizawesome stuff. So my question it, where can i get some good beginners tutorials?
Well it depends for what program; I would just google though... Here are some sites that I know have some tutorials: www.3dtotal.com http://www.poopinmymouth.com/tutorial/tutorial.htm
heres some more http://www.highend3d.com/ http://www.tutorialized.com/ http://www.3d-palace.com/ http://the-structure-of-man.blogspot.com/ once you know the basics this page has some nice info -> http://www.iddevnet.com/quake4/ArtReference_CreatingModels
My XSI professor keeps recommending CGTalk, but being a lazy bastard and not having checked it out yet, I don't know if it would help you begin modeling. Take a peek around, though, you could proably find something.
CGTalk? I've heard they aren't very kind to beginners(the whole forum is populated by professionals and freelancers). If you happen to use Blender then I suggest that you take a look in the Blender Artists forum(formerly known as Elysiun). People in there are generally very helpful(I guess that comes with open source software). And no bitching about the UI, if you can't use something that's different from 3DS MAX then it's your problem. :D
3DS Max for me i can get it free, and ive heard most people say they use it. The other things i would use would either be XSI or Maya, cost not being a factor.
does anyone know if there is any way to turn on the lines inbetween vertexes? its getting really annoying not being able to see what im doing.
Edged faces; Right click on the viewport where it says its name like "Perpective" 4th down is is "Edged Faces" it will overlay a wireframe over the shaded version... Really helpfull.. (Im assuming you are using 3ds max)
yea, i got that like 10 seconds after i posted i posted this on iwannamap forums, but might as well post here: how do you export UVW wraps to Jpeg? the tuts i have are from ver. 7, and the guy uses a plugin called textporter, which wont install on 9 for some reason (dll error)? edit: ok, i figured that one out. but now, can anyone tell me where to get a plugin or how to export models to a valve SMD file?
Click the hammer shaped icon (The same pannel where you spawn basic geometry and edit its properties) Click on "More" and find textporter; select the dimension; and have fun... (Keep it 1:1 Ratio or otherwise it will be streched)
ummm....yea i solved that already, my only problem is i have no way of compiling to the source engine.
argh. well, anyways, heres my first two models, EV4R!!! (pssst...i suck at setting up good render scenes ) i learned my lesson in texturing this...always put everything real close together, otherwise it looks like .... Bench is better, and i even put up an old sig!
Play around with the diffrent maps and learn how they interact with eachother; try making metal and plastic just by using 1 texture; A good way to learn how to use the diffrent maps
