Anybody here ever hear of the SCA?

    http://www.sca.org

Ever since watching a few certain movies such as King Arthur ( I cant stop watching it! NO! ) I've been tractor beamed in...wait thats for the trekkies uhmm...I've been drug in by a spear attached to a rope being pulled by a horse? Meh anyway, the knight / medieval stuff sparks a serious interest in my mind amid all the porn, computer stuff, gaming, porn and uhmm...porn. ;)

Has anyone ever gone into live combat in full armor with real swords ( dull of course ) that exists on this forum? I'd like some information on it as to whether or not its fun.

My main interests are in the horseback archery, jousting, horseback combat and foot combat area's ( I dont know what the 'areas' are really named ).

Things like some of the stuff in these pics are what I find cool:

    For LOTR fans:

But yeah if anyone has ever participated in any of these kinds of events I'd like to know about your experiences, especially if it was in the horseback activites.

I've got to admit, re-enactment stuff has always interested me, but due to some of the gut bursting hillarious videos I've seen of "nerds in armor", I have a hard time taking it seriously. It may just be the nature of the thing, or some people might just take it a little too far.

But nevertheless, it certainly looks fun. >;o

Ive always wanted to go to a ren fair. But since im from a Japanese bloodline, ive always wanted to go as a Samurai from the same time period (if they existed then, Little shaky on the specifics). Talking only in Japanese and having my GF "Translate" for me. Of course i also wanted to know Akido/Kendo/whatever the samurai swordsmanship was called so i could participate in the duels and such. Sounds fun to me though either way.

A little different, but I had a history teacher dress up like a British Redcoat and reenact the American War if Independence. He had a blast I think, though it's certainly not a hobbie for me.

Well I know people who do the LARP stuff and if youre going to do a re-enactment do it correctly. Dont use aluminum foil swords and pot lids! You wanna look cool. :)

I've gotten into real-life airsoft gun WW2 re-enactments that's really cool too! Any sort of re-enactment with weapons should be crowned heaven.

Aluminum foil swords...naa if I were to get into this stuff it'd be replica's of the real thing. The only thing that'd be aluminum would be the armor on my horse just for the fact I dont want to put 60 pounds of iron or steel on him.

    Steel sword...10 pounds I think?
    Steel heater shield...30 pounds....maybe?
Full armor suit with underlying protection....120 pounds?

My only problem is the armor that actually looks cool you cannot use in combat because its 'open'. Such as roman armor like the following:

    http://www.swordsofhonor.com/romanarmor.html

    http://www.swordsofhonor.com/rosuofar.html
Cause I dont fancy those standard types that are entirely metal.
Well if I decide to go into this as another expensive hobby on my already expensive hobby list I'l be sure to get pics of me and my horse. Who knows, if I do my own forging ( if I can convince my dad that smelting my own steel is safe with the right protection ) then I might do some stuff from LOTR ;)

I know my brother was into longsword fighting for a while there. I hear it's fun. If you can find a good guild, I'm sure you'll enjoy yourself.

This seems like something you would want to get pretty pissed for. Pissed and wielding one of these.

I have to admit, I have done so, although to be fair, it was eight hundred years ago, and the Mongolian Horde did start it. It's not as much fun when you're forced into it like that; feels more like work.

But that was the last time those Mongols stole my paper, lemme tell you!

Oh god not the blonde dude with the 10 foot sword *rolls eyes*

LOTR would be the most I'd do for fantasy, anime fantasy just does not interest me.

I do airsoft gun re-enactments once a week approx.

And sometimes I make films outta it, as realistic as possible :p

Its quite fun, being out for a few days, camping, always being alert, chasing eachother, setting up ambushes and whatnot.

I'd highly recommend it. Its rather expensive if you want good gear, but its fun as hell.

The only setback is that I pay the gear/weapons/protection for 3 guys.. 'Cause they're unemployed and aint got no money :D

I play paintball but for the most part the word "Tactics" is nowhere to be found in paintball. Its run them down, gun them down. Although its fun when you want to vent some steam it gets boring ESPECIALLY when there are rules like the following ( these are real rules at the local paintball place ):

You must ask the other player to surrender if you are closer than 25 feet, he or she may decide not to surrender and fire back.
( Fail to do this and you get thrown out for half an hour, do it again and they throw you off the field for the day. Funny thing is I cannot bunker them yet they can shoot me without having me surender ).

Lets not forget you cannot touch anything under your mask otherwise it counts as a violation, as in readjusting your glasses...Two violations and you get barred from the field.

Oh and gotta love the "Do not shoot any kids at less than 50 feet ". You know for a fucking "scenario" game this is pissing me off. First violation you get kicked for an hour, second violation you get banned from the entire facility. You can get in trouble with their parents as well if a 10 year old cannot take it like a man and bitches you out. Just insane.

    Back to the topic :D

Yeah airsoft looks like a good alternative for me, much more structured and less 'children' ( although I am 16 you know what I am talking about, the kind that when hit with a paper airplane whine and say it hurts ). About $500 would be the average investment from what I am looking at with a P90 from a good manufacturer:
    http://www.21stcenturyairsoft.com/details/TM-P90TR

The thing that really got me looking at airsoft earlier this year was this video:
    http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3817213100467821104

One of my friends was there and told me how great the mil-sim events are.

Any P90 Airsoft gun is crap.. I can tell you that

You should aim for a G36, at least the AEG one is pretty awesome (I can put a pic up of mine if you wanna see)

I know what I'm talking about, so trust me.

And if you care, those are the ones I am in posession of:

G36, Fully Automatic, Electric, about 0,8 Joule force.

Colt XM188, Spring Operated, Mounted 4x Sight and modified spring, about 0,9 Joule Force.

S&W Sigma, Gas Operated, No modifications, About 1,5 Joule Force (Extreme!)

Glock 17, Spring Operated, New Mantle, the old one broke, About 0.6 Joule Force.

S&W (Dunno the brand), spring operated, busted, and just generally retarded, 0.0 Joule Force :p

G36, Spring Operated, worn down, modified reload function, Mounted Lasersight, about 0.8 Joule Force.

Desert Eagle, Spring Operated, New clip, the old one broke (its crap), no modifications, about 0.6 Joule Force.

Enfield L85, Spring Operated, removed the Scope, no other modifications, about 0.7 Joule Force.

Walther P990, Spring Operated, no modifications, about 0,6 Joule Force.

Beretta (something), pure fucking crap, 0.0 Joule Force, 'CAUSE ITS BORKED!

I think thats it, and of course I have tons of clothes, protection, equipment and whatnot.

I think all of it ends up on about... $1000 or so, quite cheap, but I live in sweden, and there's lots of places to get cheap military clothes and protection, and most weapons were bought pre-used, and has just been polished and fixed

My dad is working on building a cabin out in the desert near Death Valley, and every time I'm out there and driving around I wonder how it would play out if I were to get a bunch of guys with airsoft or paintball guns, drop the teams off miles away from each other, and let them go at it. The terrain around there could be a blast to fight in, and there are plenty of old mineshafts that would be fine to enter (theres one that goes all the way through a mountain, is pretty much level all the way through, and has plenty of headroom). A game of CTF could get pretty crazy.

Everything would have to be based on the honor system, so you would want to be playing with an extended group of friends. The rounds would take quite a while, but could be really fun. And hey, no bullshit rules, PHASER! :D
