I was told maps will be 'scaled up' 16x in a few patches time. Is this true? And will it mean maps are simply bigger, or everything smaller? thanks
It means that everything will be shrunk 16x. If you plan on making a 16x map, get started now. When 16x maps are added, aircraft will also be added. There is a slight possibility 16x maps might be released without aircraft to see if extremely large scale vehicle maps can work. Stay tuned. [2x, 4x, 8x, and 16x are also possibilities, 16x is the only one set in stone though.]
use <tl> + the scale tool, can scale a whole map in a few seconds if you know the decimal for it edit: save before use, only my dual quad core rig can pull this off in a reasonable time with larger complex maps
lol. arnt textures set to a resolution, so scaled textures will be smaller but hard to discern detail.
Put the texture scale (in the Texture Application tool in Hammer) to something like 0.01 or 0.02, which would be equivalent to 0.16 or 0.32 for a normal map. (The standard in HL2 is 0.25). I presume you'd be making maps specifically for the 16x format, so this wouldn't be an issue. As far as map sizes, 2x would be nice for larger maps still within the realm of sensibility for vehicles/infantry, and without sacrificing too much brush detail. You could fit in 4 emp_islands with room to spare.
I MAKE A INFANTRY ONLY LABYRINTH MAP AT 16x SCALE AND FORCE PEOPLE TO PLAY IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Note: "and without sacrificing too much brush detail". In a 16x map, the smallest features would be 16 units in size, unless you want to risk making brushes in Hammer that are less than 1 unit wide (which, as you may gather, risky). In a 2x map the smallest features would be 2 units in size. Though, I suppose you could argue between 2x and 4x...
I believe this is why devs have said previously that if they made 16x maps they would primarily use models for structures and detail.
I suggested bunker models along with small forts etc. It doesn't have to be pretty. Maybe blizzerd can model us some.
