"Disconnect: The cvar mat_dxlevel needs to be greater than or equal to 70.000000."
Appears on Viper's server on the maps money, crossroads, cod, escort_alt5.
Doesn't affect money_cl, district402, slaughtered, mvalley and seemingly not EPIC's server.
I'm able to spectate for about 2-15 second before being forced out of the server

Having any of the launch options of +mat_dxlevel (70, 80, 81, 90, 95 and 98) causes hl2.exe to stop working at the start of sending client info to the server.

Why can't you run in higher DirectX levels? The Orange Box engine branch does not support anything under 7.0.

Have you tried adding it within autolexec.cfg? Or deleting that and trying to force the game to reload all the default settings.

Trawled through the shit pile of guides on google.
The launch option -dxlevel 98 worked.

Thanks to Trickster for pointing me to autoexecs, without that, this HL2 tweak guide with a working command wouldn't have appeared.
I hope Source 2 doesn't have this bullshit.
