Okay, here's the idea: The entire map takes place in the dead of winter, in a very rural area. The terrain is mountainous, and heavily forested. Vehicles are usable, but they will be forced into very tight quarters and, in all likelihood, diced by grenadiers taking cover in the trees. So, vehicles are either going to need a heavy escort or a whole lot of speed to make it to the enemy's base. If we had MG jeeps, this would be the map to use them.

However, vehicles are going to have one huge advantage over infantry. Every ten, fifteen minutes or so, a snowstorm blows in. Visibility gets cut down to nearly nothing. Any infantry who isn't in a vehicle, a building, or next to a refinery (all that steam would presumably keep them warm) takes damage. Let's assume the snowstorm lasts about thirty seconds to a minute. Any infantry left out in the cold the entire time is probably dead, or close to it. Wounded soldiers don't stand a chance. Before a blizzard strikes, perhaps give a warning and paint a glow or something on safe zones.

So, basically: a classic map that emphasizes infantry and light vehicles, with a gameplay twist thrown in for variety. Good idea or bad idea?

This could actually be done, and would be pretty amusing to watch, go ahead and give it a try :D

Actually, I, uh... more meant it as an idea to others. I don't have any modding skillz.

The whole hurting snowstorm/fog bit sounds easy, however I'd have no idea how to keep Infantry safe when near buildings/refineries unless bases were predefined or such. Then again, beyond basic playable have yet to care to dive deeper into map scripting and such.

make both starting points walled in like on crossroads (the hour glass level) and you are safe if within the base. throw in a few random log cabins and your set.

Just make a giant set of nodraw brushes for the areas where damage needs to be delt, and use a filter to only hurt infantry.

This is actually a really cool idea. If I had the time I would be really tempted to do it, but I already have 2 unfinished projects and I don't plan on picking up any more.

Protecting res node areas would be easy: presumably you would use a trigger_hurt for the wind chill damage, so you just have to cut out the sections where you don't want to hurt people. The tricky part would be protecting players in buildings (there isn't any way for mappers to tell where buildings are going to be placed). Quackums' idea would solve this by having entire bases as safe areas. Another alternative would be to set it somewhere like Greenland, and have the bases built underground.

I could probably pull this off, but I need hammer to work first :(

Is there any way i could configure the old downloadable hammer editor and configure it to work with source?
