Simple as that. Make it glow red and maybe a tiny amount of smoke when it is overheated. What do you think :) ?

    Good idea is good.

We need some kind of visual or auditory communication that a vehicle is overheated.

Some tank guns glow red when overheated.

But our guns don't overheat, the engines do.

Then we need some particles to fly out of the vehicle when it overheats a la sticky stuns.

It doesn't matter how it works, the communication has to be there.

The reload sound for missiles (which isn't used in game) could work. It sounds sort of like the mechanism is malfunctioning/jamming.

if you can switch textures while the game is running it would also be cool to have damage textures for tanks. one for healthy, one for half plates gone and one for just hull left - per side ofc.
or you could also use two textures (armor and damaged armor) and paint actual hits into the armor textures alpha layer. if you repair the tank you simply fade to opague again based on total health ...

so much cool stuff could be done. could ...

but then why waste coding time on a source engine game. every line should go into a port to a more suited engine. but whatever we had this various times over the recent years.
and even if someone would port it there still is a shitload of artwork, including models, animations, sounds and maps to be done.

why particles? use a red glowing texture and blend it depending on overheat state ...

also while you are at finding out how to use multiple textures i cant stress enough that empires needs this -> http://youtu.be/BzpUVtVUBTI?t=45s
