I had this once before, but never as frequent as this. I keep getting frozen screens and a looping sound. It normally happens if I open up a menu or fire a tank weapon, but I have had it after shooting a pistol once. If anyone can help me, I would be gratefull. Yes I do have a shitty soundchip (AC97)

sound_restart or restart_sound or reset_sound or something like that. It'll come in the list in console. :)

snd_restart is the thing you're thinking of.

And I have NO idea what causes it. I don't think I've seen it since I got a real sound card. :-O

Sounds like Half-Life 2s first bug.

Either the screen froze while loading textures, meshes, etc.
or it froze when an audio file couldn't be loaded in time (the engine only buffers like the first 0.125 seconds, which then repeat until the sound is fully loaded.

    oh wait! That's a feature.

Does it only happen once per corner, weapon, tank, sound whatever?
Did you just get this for the very first time?

There could be plenty of reasons (excluding slowness), like drivers, harddisk / fragmentation, too high a texture resolution (not enough vRAM), etc.

I get this quite often as well, and have to restart the game, since the game crashes.

Now that I think of it, it only happened after I got an Upgrade, and when I was playing on the custom server map. Do you think it could have anything to do with the Custom Weapon sounds?

Try to delete modelsounds.cache in your Empires/ folder and see what happens.

    What's your specs?
    Mine are:
    P4 2.4 GHz
    1 GB RAM
    Geforce 4 with MX 440
    AC '97 audio card
I think it has something to do with the hardware.
