I've figured out how to decompile the models to smd, and I have an SMD importer for 3DS 6 but not for 9 .. Anyone have any suggestions? Do I have to get milkshape just to export it? Say it ain't so

I had a similar problem; unfortunately I couldn't find any mention of an importer written for max 9. You could always write one yourself, SMD is a very simple format.

XSI, on the other hand, has a working importer/exporter. I also find the interface much easier to understand and to work with...

Just download an SMD importer for Max9.

I don't remember where I got mine from but shouldn't be hard to find.

I suggest you try searching for "HDRI Halflife2 3DS MAX" This will cause you you to stumble upon a tutorial of how to get charachters out of the game and into 3DS Max so you can render them in a "Realistic Environment" and luckily enough an importer/exporter...

I've used milkshape to make smds out of someone elses models before, whats so bad about it? I can reset the trial period at will.
