How to install the test version [READ ME BEFORE YOU TRY]

First, log out / quit steam.
1. Copy the 3 empires GCF files which can be found in your steamapps folder.
Do NOT open them and save the files that are inside them.

Failure to do this will overwrite your Empires folder.

2. Copy your old Empires folder.

Failure to do this will overwrite your Empires folder.

3. Place the steam.cfg in your steam folder.

If you managed to do everything correct, startup steam and it will update Empires. Wait for it to finish and you will be ready to go.
Note: * IF YOU CANNOT LOG INTO STEAM THEN THE CONTENT SERVER MAY BE DOWN. TO LOG IN, RENAME, MOVE OR DELETE STEAM.CFG *

 

One final point of idiot proofing: You have to restart Steam and then wait for it to update completely.

 

Someone asked for the bat file I use to swap back and forth between the steam versions I use so here it is.

you can do it yourself if you thought about it but what ever...

There is actually two bat files. I could make it one file if I wanted to make it more complicated but, two is enough. One is to play normal steampires the other is to play testpires(ohh I just made that up. I like it).

You will have to change some parts of each bat file... like the location your steam is in... and your user name.
I have a x64 system so my steam is in
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam

if you have a x86 system yours will be in
C:\Program Files\Steam

just place it on your desktop or where ever and make sure you modified the bat files before using them.... OHH and make sure you name the test versions of the gcf... with ".test" at the end like this "empires_scripts.gcf.test" and name the empires dir empires.test
