    I think I might have had that happen a couple of times, I just restarted empires and it goes away.
    What graphics card do you have?
    I have had stuff like that happen in other just because my (shitty old) graphics card was overtaxed.

    Download RivaTuner, turn on the graphs for temperatures and shit and let it collect data while you play and get back to us
