Give players ownership on vehicles and limit count

Discussion in 'Feedback' started by NerdIII, Aug 19, 2010.

?

Do we need some sort of limit for vehicle spawning?

  1. Yes, a fixed limit of x vehicles alive for each player.

  2. Yes, but with a more sofisticated mechanism. (See OP or share your ideas.)

  3. No, admins deal with griefers. Don't take freedom from players.

Stop spamming of vehicles / Per player vehicle limit

Sometimes you see people who don't like the current map and spawn masses of jeeps or APCs. (mostly vehicle training, escort)
Vehicle spam blocks the VF, wastes resources and makes the game lag. That made me think about some sort of limitation per player as a basic idea.
But because I never had to spawn a series of vehicles doesn't mean there would be no good reason for it. So what do you think?

    a) I would introduce a concept of ownership to vehicles first. This would not mean that you lock out people from your vehicles, but when you are the owner other players would jump into the passenger seats even if the driver position is empty (the way it works with the APC spawns already).
    b) Vehicles created in command mode don't have an owner and the commander could create unlimited vehicles. F-S-Space if he does. (no change in concept here)
    c) You gain ownership of a vehicle as soon as you enter the driver seat. Again this doesn't give you any privileges.
    d) The list box for chassis selection remembers it's last value, so you can't accidently build a jeep, when 'an object was in the way' and you try again.
    e) The VF gets a radius of x game units that is checked for vehicles that are owned by you when you try to build another vehicle. A new message would be added to the set of construction fail messages that would inform you that you already own a nearby vehicle. If I don't like what I just built or it is a damaged vehicle I would offer it to someone else, ask an engineer to repair it or just plain drive it farther away. When I walk all the way back I have time to think about using resources more wisely. ;)

Point a) also deals with situations in which people accidently get into other players' tanks or accidently move someones spawn APC when they want to heal in it.

The initial problem this suggestion is trying to fix is already countered by moderating servers.
The suggestion of vehicle ownership is nothing new and has been shot down each time.
There are many instances in which taking another player's vehicle is valid.

@Fricken Hamster: Your post made me change the title, thx. ;)
I recognize you just posted quickly to shorten the whole discussion about locking people out of vehicles - which is not what I have in mind. You'd rather see me yell at people to take over my tank when I die repairing it. ^^
Take your time to read the first post if you like.

@meg griffin: These are two different things. In Blizzerd's thread the idea is to let the commander dictate the types and ammounts of each chassis on the field, so he doesn't have to scream "We don't need 10 artys!" or "Build only a few vehicles I need res for research!". My idea is focussed on commander-less maps where the VF can't be locked. It would prevent vehicle spam on every map, but I don't try to keep us from building a jeep - as long as it is only one within the check raduis! In fact both suggestions can perfectly coexist.

Q: So the VF tells me I already have a vehicle nearby, but I died got ressurected and totally lost my memory. Which one is it?
A: The one with the greenish color on the map. (orange or yellow for NF, cyan for BE)

The game wouldn't lag since mootant made it possible for I don't know I think 64 vehicles or 128 vehicles in one server, but the slight difference in lag probably won't affect you that much.

On your other two points I think that all the game needs is at least 1 active admin in the server, and !votekick and !voteban accessible by common players.

When the populations booms the servers with no admins are the most used ones.
