anti-aliasing is what makes edges smooth, the "glowy shit" is (bad) HDR lightning. (and anisotropic filtering is what makes textures less blurry if you look at them from an angle)
AA is the first thing I drop in any game. It has the most overhead, unless we're talking about SSAO or something. If I can get better textures, models and decent framerates from its removal, I'm happy to.
Most of It's pretty old, and I mean honestly at this point people could re-post a lot of that stuff anyway, I doubt you spend your time remembering 5-year-old screenies. Yes, I play with almost the lowest possible graphics settings, not because my computer sucks, but because my internet sucks periodically. If lots of stuff is happening onscreen and it slows my computer a bit to render it, it simply exacerbates the connection lag that already exists. I had this problem with Starcraft II on higher graphical settings, and honestly I don't care about graphics anyway. If I did I wouldn't be here
Turning off Anti-aliasing will make models and textures look better, what? Anti-aliasing is the removal of pixelated edges, turning them into smooth silk. Extreme picture. Half-Life 2. Bewbs.
I was talking more about the graphical load required to load larger textures and the fact that applying AA almost always doubles the load on my card. For instance, if I had AA on maybe I could have 512 textures, but with AA on that could jump to 2048 or perhaps even 4096. Or, in a better example, with shadows I could probably manage the lowest setting on animated or good quality static shadows, but with AA off, I could have good dynamic shadows on without sacrificing anything else. It's probably more about the games I play, than anything. In Empires, though, I just leave it off because it will actually lower my framerate, and I don't really need that. Perils of having a 1gb card, I guess, but I'm happy enough with it.
I joined BSID back in 2009, because I felt like it. TBH, that was my 4th year into this game but I still didn't know shit about this community. I left BSID when they left Empires.
