hammer is an exceedingly simple level editor compared to UnrealEd or that crazy Quake 3 editor whatever it was called

GTKRadiant? It's quite weird after Hammer, but it's a lot faster to use. :)

Anyways, like people are saying Hammer is one of the easiest level editors out there. :) The displacements are quite hard to get accurately right in the editor, but luckily we can use height maps and programs like dispgen. ;)

For those who want to map for Empires: Read normal Source mapping tutorials first, same rules apply for Empires maps. Everything is the same except for a couple of entities. :)

Mapping is easy, if you have the time and a computer that can handle the buggy resourcehogging hammer.

Do you know where can I find that mini-tutorial on how to make Hammer work in DX7.0 mode? I had to stop using the beta sdk version, because it fucked up the entities quite badly at times. Everything else worked better than with this non-beta sdk version, but if the brush entities refuse to work... you can't do shit with it.

Can't you just plop "-dxlevel 70" into the target field of a shortcut to Hammer?

    Doesn't work. :( I tried it already.

edit: Now this is pretty fucked up... I started it with -dxlevel 80 now the models work and I can finally see something, BUT all my displacement surfaces got their alphas inverted. :( I hate Source mapping...

The displacement alpha's being messed up is a long kown bug, it always happens.

The thing is that they sometimes flip during compile, not only when you load your map. I don't know what's the case with this new update though. :) I'm hopeful.
