except that people can play all the other maps on any server, with default settings, so they know how they're designed to be played. with 1 custom server, this is the only chance these maps have got.
I remember the last custom map server that was up (can't remember who's it was) and it lagged a bit when more than 4 people were on it but i didn't mind cause it was a break from the regular maps. I'm glad too see that another one is in the works.
Has anyone actually played a match of tic-tac-toe with 10+ people? If so, what is it like? Tic-tac-toe is the one map that I can play for hours if there's someone to play with. Unfortunately i've only played with 4 ppl max so I have no idea how it feels in a populated server with more manpower.
We had a 9 person match on Tictactoe going. Pretty fun :-) I just got mani mod installed on the server so you can pick which of the custom maps mentioned at the beginning of the post you'd like to play by votemap-ing. I would have added more custom maps but these were the only ones that were complete in the ONE rar file. RE: Sped up resources/research --> I see both sides of the argument. Guys who like the fast speeds, would you still play the maps if research was slower?
I don't really mind which way resources go. I don't suppose mani mod would allow some kind of public vote to change the settings? If not, just do what the admins think is best.
OK. I've upped the max player number to 20 because it can handle it. I noticed there is now a ONE/JPL Custom Map server. Does that server have 4x research/resources? If so I could turn it back to normal on the CW one so people would have options.
I think that fastdl should be enabled on server (not only dl which is off atm). More people would join then.
I agree. But I'd rather have a higher max player limit than allow downloads. It would lag the people playing to have other people download it. Additionally, I don't think the maps when downloaded correctly transfer the minimap file... making it unplayable. Thinking about it....
How do I install this? I extracted to my Empires folder and it didn't help. I reinstalled Empires because I fooled around with it, but a fresh install didn't help I'll continue to experiment.
Knight - I saw you in game on some custom maps so I assume you got it figured out. For others, extract the zip file onto your desktop and then copy the nested "Empires" folder and it should retain correct folder structure.
Well, I did figure it out, but only after copying all the contents from the zipped folder to the preexisting folders. Not necessarily most efficient. It was good to try out some new maps though, there could be some real winners there.
I think this is what the .res files you see bundled with some maps are for. They link to every resource that the map requires, sending them along to the client when they request the map. But I would prefer larger player numbers over allowed downloads. Just put the address of where to get the maps in the server name. People should be able to figure it out.
I've added a few more maps to the cycle (see the first post) and tweaked some more server settings to keep lag down. Friendly fire is on! So be careful when using arty
