Autodesk 3DS Max 2012 is out for $3,495.

Which means 2011 is going to get a lot cheaper soon.

I already found one for $299.95.

I'm really tempting to buy it if I get enough money together.

That's not true. Files saved with a studente version are only marked as a student version. (I believe it does this for all student products, I know it does it with Maya, 3ds and Autocad)

Mootant could just be using an older version of 3ds. They make it a point to break the save format for all previous versions when they release a new one, probably as it's the only reason to buy the new version.

yeah take adobe for example. The last photoshop version was 50% bugfixes, 20% stuff only 1% of the consumers need and 30% new gimmicks that gimp addons could do 3 years ago but you need it cause its not compatible to older versions and all the universitys, print shops etc. use it.

To be fair, it does allow you to save compatible files with older versions, as well as load files from older versions.
