How about we could have some more nice little particles in everything? Think about seeing a great (<--In terms of goodlooking) particle effect whenever u: 1) drop ammoz 2) drop radar/turre(n)t 3) get ammoz out of the box 4) lay down 5) stand up 6) die 7) spawn 8) type 9) Post in this thread just trying to fill emptys emptyness. I particles PROs: -game is nicer CONs: -particles eat 9 year old comput0rs
Dropping turrets/radars/ammo could do with an effect. Similar to the commander's dropping buildings, but smaller and (red for NF, blue for BE) coloured.
yeah, this is realy half way serious. empires could be the source game that all remember to be the one with all the nice little particles. well, I can't point out how a particle for taking ammo out of box should look like, but everything is better then that old HL1/HL2 style.
Canyon needs fog, Slaughtered needs mist, Glacial needs snowstorms, Topicvendetta needs glare, mvalley/dustorm need...dustorms.
If duststorm actually had a dust storm it would be much better than the fog/ z-clip distance. I think theres a func_dustcloud entity or something but a massive one across all of dust storm would probably lag/suck.

Radar and turrets used to have particles but I disabled them because they were hacky and I asked a dev to code them in a non-hacky way and they just stared at me blankly. Ammo from a box is a good idea (ala Alien Swarm) A particle above someones head indicating they are typing would be good too. See above. Originally I wanted the unbuilt "flare smoke" to be blue and red for the respective teams but kylegar liked the yellow stuff (WHY) and wouldn't code seperate smokes. fog settings, fog settings, expensive, not a particle, I tried a duststorm once and lost over 250 FPS, AFTER OPTIMISATION. Unpawsible. I was going to make a low-detail pack for people but instead of telling me which effects chewed performance most (so I could do less overall work and get it done faster), they all flamed me and basically treated me like shit for the past few months. Somehow I'm less inclined to be nice.
It would be nice if the devs could be bothered with finishing off particle support. Far too much stuff is still using the bad old HL2 particles. I'll list all I can think of which needs implementing below. - Vehicle and building explosion effects, as well as secondary explosions to somewhat hide the wrecks of vehicles and buldings disappearing. - Missile and cannon trails (preferably definable per weapon). The option to use a particle instead of the cannon shell model would be nice as well. - Tank cannon and missile muzzle effects. (as in, the big flash of fire and stuff you see around a cannon when it fires) - The same as above, except for infantry weapons. - Arty strike, instant heal, other squad powers could do with effects. - Revive needs a seperate effect. - Vehicle smoke, with different particles depending on the damage taken. - VEHICLE GRENADE LAUNCHER EXPLOSIONS. The old nuke effect is not acceptable, and drops my fps to a far greater degree than any of empty's particles. - ML turret missile explosions. (still using the old hl2 effects) - MG turret tracers and muzzle effects. Thats all I can think of for now.
Agree with all of your requests omni. But the coders have been hella busy recently. I'm asking but not getting much in the way of replies I should learn to code and do it myself.
Or make something similar to the quake 3 speech bubble for talking (then we can start getting pissed off at chat killers).
yeh these effects would add to the atmosphere of the game and make it more polish. yes it will lag some people and yes it would kill some frame rates.. but if its implemented, perhaps add option to set the "detail" level of the fog.. or snowstorm.. or dust storm.. etc etc. make a map where its heavily fog, like silent hill.
