It might be worth mentioning that both empires and steam are 100% clean installs on a new drive in a new pc, but with the 3 files from Vicky's fix added. The one time windows asked me to allow or block empires when i started it up the first time, of course i allowed it, so news from the internet should not be blocked afaik
Shitty Question: is your dpi setting in windows anything other than 100% ? I mean this: I haven't tried if it can break anything ingame, it just a random guess, since I know that setting that to 125% can break certain desktop applications. (just like the classic windows 2000 look [when used on 7] can break applications, too)
Nope it's 100% I do have win7 now instead of vista. It's not impossible win7 requires me to do something i'm not aware off, if this wasn't needed in the past. Though i'd be suprised if people have to manually allow stuff access through the firewall or things like that. So far win7 handles almost exactly the same as vista did.
Your firewall should be fine if it looks like this, but just so you can forget about it, disable the firewall for the profile you are currently on. No restart needed. Gratulations on abandoning Vista (I know it looks and behaves > 90% like 7 after all the patches, but still).
Does this still happen if you go to normal empires, launch it (presumably you will see news) and then go back to testpires?

The news box loads from http://motd.epic-empires.co.uk/news.txt Does that link work for you in your web browser? If so, a firewall may be blocking the connection from Empires to the website.
Yes, I commited everything, need someone to upload the html to the epic server, could have hosted it on one of my own servers, but this way its easier to change.
