I think someone on the dev team should get in contact with Valve and see if they'd be willing to distribute Empires 2.2 over Steamworks. Why? Empires needs some serious publicity to get more players. If 2.2 is released over Steamworks like INS just was (e.g. it shows in everyone's game list who has Source SDK) the mod will gain a HUGE number of players. To everyone who is going to whine that we'll get tons of newbs, remember, the whole point is to get more players. If you guys don't want to / won't / Valve says no, I can provide a really fast (10 mbit unmetered) North America (NW) download mirror when 2.2 is released.
This is a good idea for 2.2, when there will be a tutorial map, a new HUD, newbie tips and all that stuff. 2.2 is still just an OB port.
Yeah make it newbie friendly bevor thinking of steamworks, atm it will scare new people away and I wont imagine the absolut horror of millions of people that have no clue what they do
An OB port With a few... extra features... :p I still think it would have been better as a straight port to OB, keeping the current balance of the game, aside from a few fixes (NFAR, nukes, plasma, ect) intact. Even so, I'm starting to like the direction 2.2 is going in... I think.
That's how we always were thinking, "just a few fixes more" lol, but yeah you need to stop somewhere or this thing'll never release
agreed, no steam works until the new HUD etc. We also need to remind valve, that all the mods on steamworks were dead ones (with the exception of insurgency), and empires mod, without steamworks support is still populated.
I agree, Steamworks is a great idea, but the port is not yet 'ready' for the big release .. there are still some issues need to be resolved like a better HUD. But 2.2 is a big step forward!
I say no for 2.2. Yes for 2.5/2.3/2/.4. Right now empires isn't really that much different from 2.12 and I think you'll just get a lot of disappointed people who will just leave after seeing almost nothing is changed.
