Is anyone crashing on map load? If you are, I need your to know the make and model of your video card. If your not...well, I would like to know the make and model of your video card as well. For some reason, I'm getting a crash in shaderapidx9.dll, and MOOtant isn't. I have an Nvidia card, MOOtant has a ATI card, so my feeling is that theres something up with the different manufacturers. I could be very wrong though.
I crash when I try to make a server: http://www.empiresmod.com/bug_tracker/view.php?id=1211 It begins with Loading materials, but after that it crashes. Got ATI driver. But i think my problem is unrelated here.
If you do not stay up to date with the driver scene, please do not comment upon it. (You get cool points for typing ATi correct though lol) The current Catalyst drivers use a completely new architecture to support the newest ATi cards such as the 3xxx and 4xxx series. Bit by bit the driver quality is improving. nVidia did not change architecture, and are currently having driver issues with their newest cards. But I did hear they FINALLY managed to get the new drivers to support HDR + AA. TL;DR: Driver architecture is very different for ATi, nVidia is having some issues. Don't expect your card to do what you think it will do.
Yesterday evening i had no problems with 2.2. I even loaded my own maps that i compiled for OB in empires. nvidia 8800GTS 320 MB You use the latest driver?
I was getting a crash on map-load the day before yesterday, where some VGUI pointers were getting corrupted. The same binaries had been working fine, right before that. To avoid the crash: - I added "-sw" windowed mode to the launch options (even though I was already running in windowed mode from the in-game setttings, go figure) - then started up a local listen server, and the crash was gone - then connected the the official, and that worked too I didn't get to the bottom of what caused the corrupted VGUI pointer. Would be interesting to see if others are seeing this same problem, or something else. And if the above solves it for them I'm running on an NVidia SLI setup
Yesterday I tried to make my own server. First attempt was ... mildly successful. The server started but the motd wasn't displaying correctly nor could I click any buttons. I tried again and it worked. Today, (just now) I tried to make my own server again, but it crashed immediately on load. I tried again, same thing.. and I would try more but I have to leave now ... sorry I can't be at the play test x_x
The game runs just fine for me Ati Xpress 200 Additional video Settings if that helps. Sidenote: I'm running in DirectX 8 mode.
Upon further investigation (lol) the same thing still happens. When I try to use the "create server" I always crash at the loading screen. When this happens, I get two files in my Empires folder that have a red ! mark, instead of the nice green check mark. They are the "serverconfig.vdf" in the Empires folder, and the "user.scr" in the Empires/cfg folder.. not sure if this helps any but eh.. and where are the crash bump file things..? EDIT: Looked on the mantis bug report thingy, here and changed the emp_cl_hint_seed "4" to emp_cl_hint_seed "1" in the config.cfg file.. seems to be working now just fine
Ok, I need more confirmation Before you load a map, go into the console and type emp_cl_hint_seed 1, or make it whatever. I need to know what seeds crash, and what seeds dont crash.
I thought Mootant fixed that yesterday with the help of Brutos? Or did I miss something when I wasn't there on the IRC? However, I haven't crashed so far on mapload. I have a ATi 2900XT I NEVER had problems with the ATi-drivers or the cards themselves. I rarely crash and if I do, it is often because of the Steam-ingameoverlay. I also read that ATi crashes less than nvidia (about 10-20%). But that is way too offtopic right now, just had to point that out. kill3rtomato: The crashdumps are located in your source sdk base 2007-folder.
Im running radeon X200. I havent had a crash yet, so dunno if this helps, but my default emp_cl_hint_seed was 1468, ive also tried it on 1, 2 and 4 because kill3rtomato said he crashed with it set to 4. Like I said, no crashes as of yet, should I keep testing with different numbers or does this only concern people who have crashed? *Edit, saying that, I noticed the hint seed variable is for randomising the text in the loading screens, although I dont get a loading screen and no loading screen text, just the console. Is this because I am running with the -debug commandline?
For those that aren't crashing, What are your graphics settings? It looks like if everything is on High, then it crashes. with a seed higher than 1. Can anyone confirm?
Running dxlevel 7.0 lol,Shader detail set to high and model detail set to medium. Ill try turning up settings one by one until I crash.
emp_cl_hint_seed 1 -> works emp_cl_hint_seed 2 -> crashes, during loading. When the loading bar is nearly at the end. NOTE: Tested this again to make sure, and it seems to work fine.. !? emp_cl_hint_seed 3 -> seems to work fine emp_cl_hint_seed 4 -> seems to work fine also I guess I'll experiment some more..
What are your graphics settings, specificly Shader Detail and Texture detail, as well as your videocard and DirectX level?
Model Detail - High Shader Detail - High Texture Detail - High Water Detail - Reflect World Shadow Detail - High Color Correction - Enabled Antialiasing Mode - 4x MSAA Filtering Mode - Trilinear Wait for vertical sync - Disabled Motion Blur - Enabled HDR - Full DirectX - 9.0 EDIT: Windowed, 1024 x 768
ok, you are running the same detail as me, what card are you using? Also, Try setting shader detail to low, and see if that changes anything. (the crash is in shaderapidx9.dll)
I've never had issues with particles in empires(2.2 or other). I use a nice old NVidia 7300gt (the 128 meg, 128bit one) with the 169 line of drivers for the series. These are the only ones that NEVER crash, so I accept that they are a couple versions behind(newest is 175 methinks). I get consistently shitty-but-playable framerates.
