I'd kill for a high-quality voice codec, but I don't know how to do it and it'd be incredibly expensive in terms of processing power and network bandwidth.
I think Dota 2 uses CELT, if I'm not mistaken. Then again, it only has 10 clients to take care of, vs Empires' 64.
I have some problems with the currently used voice codec, or people have just turned into mumbling asshats and suck at pressing the talk button before they start a sentence ヽ༼ຈل͜ຈ༽ノ
Well, YES but not only, people like EnT Psiko transmit a horrible ripple sound with their voice. But yesterday people told me only I hear that and that it is just my client. How the hell can I troubleshoot that?? BTW: Why are we talking in OoC IRC? :D
They don't work... at least not for me. I don't see my own spray... and I haven't noticed anyone elses. I have tried changing my spray to no effect.
Some people's sprays work, others don't. Mine doesn't. Maybe you just need to relocate it/reload it in the options? I don't know.
Just reload your spray in options. My spray was changed to some broken old one, switched to my 'recent' one in options and it works fine. WHY THE FUCK IS THIS MERGED THREAD NOW ABOUT SPRAYS? Some commands from CS:S and TF2 about VOICE: sv_use_steam_voice "1" // voice_inputfromfile will no longer function). sv_voicecodec "0" // Specifies which voice codec DLL to use in a game. Set to the name of the DLL without the extension. sv_voiceenable "1" voice_avggain "0" voice_clientdebug "0" voice_debugfeedback "0" voice_debugfeedbackfrom "0" voice_enable "1" voice_fadeouttime "0" voice_forcemicrecord "1" voice_inputfromfile "0" // Get voice input from voice_input.wav rather than from the microphone. voice_loopback "0" voice_maxgain "10" voice_modenable "1" // Enable/disable voice in this mod. voice_overdrive "2" voice_overdrivefadetime "0" voice_printtalkers // voice debug. voice_profile "0" voice_recordtofile "0" // Record mic data and decompressed voice data into voice_micdata.wav and voice_decompressed.wav voice_scale "1" <-- https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=TF2+voice_scale&sm=3 voice_serverdebug "0" voice_showchannels "0" voice_showincoming "0" voice_steal "2" voice_writevoices "0" // Saves each speakers voice data into separate .wav files
It might not have to be flac, but is there some audio codec that is a bit better than what we got? Some people sound okish, others sound like they eat rocks. I know mic quality affects it, but some people are just awful. To be fair though, how many people actually speak at a time on a server? I think the most at a time is like 9(3 on each team.) I don't know what the servers are set at, but the default value for voice_scale is 1.
I think the voice quality is slightly improved from the previous version of empires. Source 2013 uses the SILK voice codec IIRC where as the old version used the (outdated) speex codec. SILK is already one of the best voice codecs around, the only better one that I know of would be Opus. So rather than replacing the voice codec, it would be better to look into altering the codec settings, bit rate, sample rate, bit depth, ect. Also using a music codec like flac or mp3 would be far too inefficient for voice data and use way too much bandwidth (some people wouldn't even have high enough upload rates to talk lol). So please don't suggest silly things like this please. TLDR Version: Since the port empires is already using a fairly modern high quality voice codec. Changing the codec settings would be a better line of enquiry.
