Incredible gameplay - I've been hooked for the past 10 years and there's still new things happening to surprise me - the best games are the weirdest ones, where one team went for APC rushing while the other team just rolled with it and switched bases, or where the team first to heavies still loses, because they left the CV unprotected and it got stickied up.

Even just the infantry classes feel really different, but there's also quite a lot of different tanks that work differently. My favourite is artillery, but most commanders find it too risky a strategy to go for. The challenge of this game is managing people really, making sure everyone is in the right place at the right time is tantamount to victory. It's also one of the few games that's free without purchaseable "upgrades" or other cheats / premium crap thrown in.

The list of features is just insane; squad powers give your group of 5 some unique perk for a little while; as you level up (within the round, no carry-over) you can pick up to 4 skills such as mine defusal, stamina upgrade (which you use for sprinting and jumping), revive (only for engineers); squad leaders can issue commands like "fall back" "give me cover fire" to their squad; the commander can research armours and weapons, which have soft-counters so that there's always better stuff to research until endgame, at which point it is up to players to switch out weapons to their advantage; every building can be placed wherever you want, this means you can make defensive structures of your own devising using walls, armouries and turrets as your mainstay. The armouries stay longer after being destroyed, giving an advantage to walls built with armouries - but infantry walk right past (or over, on the roofs of most buildings you can get an unexpected vantage point); there's buildable towers and bridges built into some maps, if you destroy a bridge while tanks are on it, they'll fall into the water and be destroyed; squad revive can be used to get players onto the other side of the map rapidly, if you can sneak through using scout hide, then E-build an armoury your commander drops you, and switch class to engineer. That gives you an opportunity to sticky-stun the enemy commander, destroy the nearest barracks and win the game. With quick timing and coordination with you teammates, you can make a huge difference in the battlefield. Scouts can sabotage buildings, with different effects for each - it is often good tactics to get into a base, sabotage only the radar / refs, and then kill yourself. Engineers can place their own turrets, walls, radar or infantry camera (very useful!) wherever, without commander intervention. Tanks can be flipped if you hit them just right with a jeep with the right engine (go for 3-phase-electric or fission, for speed); mines can be remote detonated by placing the 9th mine, leading to a big explosion that cannot be avoided by the enemy having "mine defusal". Turrets can be upgraded; a lvl3 MG turret could hold down a lot of people, if they don't have a grenadier with them (or a scout to temporarily stun it). There's shortcuts for just about everything; B E A means to switch to engineer - that lets you switch class superfast while you dash through an armoury, to come out and surprise the light tank with an RPG suddenly (hold LMB to guide the missile after firing). The tank weapons aren't just counters, by the way - every one of them feels different, works different, and is better in different situations. Using homing while riding over somewhat wobbly ground works just fine, whereas using guided missiles or railguns would fail utterly - but if you have to stand still, be sure to get advanced coolant engine, as it works better then. The commander can restrict vehicle creation, but you can still use your own personal wages to get a tank when the VFs are locked.

Ya weirdness happening. For me accessing it multiple times first showed thumbs similar to Flasche's page, then it doesn't and it shows "Recommended" next to every item in the list.
I now find the "Do you recommend this game" thumbs up YES or down NO. Scroll down from THIS LINK, under the "Write a review for Empires Mod" and you'll see the recommended choice.

You may have to post a review for the Recommended to work. And I can't be sure it is linked to the Source Engine count shown next to recommended.

you do realize this is personalized? if lots of your friends recommend it, it gets recommended to you. and its no guarantee either, even tho a good 8/10th of my 100 friends is from empires, i have not seen such advertisment ever. it seems your wishlist and the games you and your friends own and play also influence it.
