    i say in your case "$joke == LOL" always equals to false - since its a contradiction you dont have to check for that ... ;)

    Well it is a global variable (assuming this is Ruby), $joke can have its value changed at ANYTIME by ANYONE. I think @joke is the what we are looking for, where it is a instance value for a class Player. We don't want to make it a class variable, @@joke, as not all jokes from every instance of Player is "LOL". So at initialization, when @playername == "Varbles", we will assign @joke to "BAD". We can treat Varables' @joke as a pseudo-constant by checking @playername in the method Player.changeJokeLevel(newJokeLevel). If it is equal to "Varbles", we will return from the method without changing the value of @joke.

    No, it's only funny in the context of mocking mootant, because of the "hacker/programmer" thing and a stupid replacement like joke to j0k3. Basically, you had to be there, and even if you were it wasnt funny.
