I want to try out one of them, but I'm not sure where the differences are. Things I'd like to know: -which of the two is less like KotOR (I didn't like KotOR)? -which of the two has the more believable and detailed world? I don't mean believable as in realistic, more like giving you the feeling that not everyone exists solely to wait for you and dispense plot. -is it advisable to know (=play through) the plot of ME1 before ME2? Is it only minor details or entire side plots? Does it add to the aforementioned believable world? -are there big differences between 1 and 2 gameplay-wise? From gameplay vids ME1 looks a lot more like a shooter than KotOR. I heard that 2 feels more linear and FPS-y, can you confirm that? Similar games I liked: Morrowind, Oblivion Similar games I didn't like: Gothic 2, KotOR Does anyone have advice for me? Note: Yes, I have read the ME2 thread on this forum. EDIT: One more thing: does anyone know if you can switch the audio to English in the German version?
Without playing the first one a lot of the story, plots and random fun stuff will be not understood/missed. (massive things will be missed in terms of story) in other words: play both and start with the first. if u dont wanna spend cash, use piratebay. edit: now i feel like installing obvilion again... damn you...
I like ME1 ove ME2, but they both have their own little flaws, I guess you should play them both in order.
1 is more rpg-style 2 is more action paced 1 has a deep story 2 has a shallow ass story in 1 ,playing as mixed classes is pointless and adept >> all in 2 every class is diffrent and fun to play if veteran or below then "adept is the shit" if hardcore or above then "adept is fucking bullshit" 1 has 4 types of weapons x 2 models + 1, with 10 levels of quality and diffrent stats + grenades 2 has few heavy weapons, and 2 of each (!!!) kind of weapon (+ 2 in dlcs and a geth rifle you can get on hardcore and insane) in 1 , maxing out a "social" skill unlocks new and cool options in 2 they are only usefull when you really care about non important characters (and minor bs later in the game) 1 still looks good 2 looks awesome aside for some textures 1 lets your comrades be very deadly in 2 they are more of a fire support and casters, nowhere near as powerfull as the main char 1 has like 10 skills with 15(i think) levels availible 2 has 6 x 4 max max level in 1 is 60 on second and + playthrough max level in 2 is 30 and you won't reach it on the 1st play anyways (warning, my own opinion ahead) 1 has more and cooler renegade lines 2 has less, but some of the teammates comments are gold 1 has that fucking mako bullshit in which you will spend half or more of the game in 2 has that boring scanning 1 lets you have millions of credits from selling weapons in 2 credits are very fucking rare
ME2 > ME1 in all aspects IMO, but if you don't like KotoR i'm not sure Mass Effect is for you. It's not an open world like Oblivion. Storywise it's good to know the first part, although not needed to enjoy ME2. ME2 also makes even more emphasis on the action part and has a longer main quest.
Yeah, I expected somebody to come up with that. With KotOR I was bored mostly because I didn't care for the setting and I'm not a Star Wars fan. The ME setting sounds more interesting than SW already, so I hope it'll keep me hooked for a while. Also, I decided on ME specifically because I want to give this kind of RPG (with party management etc.) another chance. We'll see.
try ME2 on insanity mode, its lots of lulz and require a fk ton of party management ^_^ note: dont try it in ME1... its too imbalanced in some aspects to the point of being unplayable.
I'd honestly recommend ME1 first, because playing it will give you so much more appreciation for ME2 when you play it. You'll like 2 better, but you can blaze through 1 in about, say, 15 hours? Less?
ME1 was a good game. It also has many small effects in ME2. ME2 was a tad less annoying when it comes to ammo and shooting. If you want, get ME 1, put it on easy, and get start punching everything. it's an easy way to run through most of the game.
OK, Amazon order for ME1 is out, thanks for your help. I guess if I like this I'll buy ME2 whenever I have enough money again (should I finally have a reason to get a job after all these years?).

The plot of ME1 helps ME2. The love interests and who you kill and let live in 1 affects 2 as well; For example, some major characters CAN die, and will not appear in ME2. Some minor characters you run into you can shoot...or they survive and appear in ME2. ME1 has the mako, which sucked...seeing it in ruins made me laugh so hard. ME1 had inf ammo...ME2 has "thermal clips" and thus NOT inf ammo...I want ma inf ammo, dammit! Heavy pistols are useless if I all I get is 24 shots...and 10 shots for a sniper rifle is just lame. One clip per shot, give me a break. But both are awesome...and worth playing. Each has at least 30 hours of play, if not more....Frankly, play 1 then two. If you want to max out 1, play ME1 twice, the second play through using the character for the first play through (only way to get level 60) which nets you more money in ME2 to boot. Having never played KOTR, I have no clue...but I know from reading online they've both like KOTR. Also, the lack of party member interaction in ME2 makes me a little sad...
Mass Effect is very different from KotoR. For one its more action oriented as opposed to turn based. Like others have said get 1 play through twice(at least) to paragon/renegade whore yourself... then get ME2 and choose whoever you want to continue the story with Paragon Shepard is fucking awesome Renegade Shepard is badass
Sentinals are fucking awesome. Overload + Warp fucking rape everything. I also love Warps stop regen ability. So useful versus Krogan and vorcha
i confirm this sentinel is such a damn boring class, but i rarely if ever die even on insane its just that the battles takes so damn long with that pussy smg
Insane + infiltrator is too easy. Cloak & kill...meh. No matter what, lacks party interaction. Oh, and elevator scenes for loading are preferable to loading screens. Fuck everyone who complained about the elevators. Fuck you ALL. I want mah elevators back. Also: ME2 is too short.
