im running vista although that should be fixed soon, lol. its all there but i cannot instal it for some reason, i double click then it just sits and take forever to load.
You mean you cannot install...empires? Please post a little more about the problem, I'm not sure what you mean...
You don't have to install it, you just have to open steam and it will be there next to your other HL2 games. Have you installed the Source SDK Base?
I know what the problem is: You're making statements that do nothing to help this thread. I won't even debate the incredibly silly (silly isn't a strong enough word here, but I don't want trouble...) statement you just made. Now scamper off and don't post unless you are trying to help.
Grumble... My fixed EXE no longer works - now when you start up empires, steam automatically replaces your exe if it isn't right...so you can't run in LAA mode anymore. Valve, YOU SUCK.
I am running Vista Home Premium on computer one with no problems. I am running XP home on computer two with no problems. If both are installed properly and run ok with other applications then Steam applications should... Key word .... should also operate properly. Over the past six months Vista has endured many fixes by Microsoft. If you are up to date you should not crash.... or be unable to install. Look for conflicting SW and it you are using a router make certain that the proper ports are open... This sounds kinda general in nature, but I am not a SW Geek.........
Is your hard drive horrendously fragmented? Do you have really slow security software that scans all files being read (most modern AV programs)? Do you see something like "msiexec.exe" in the processes list in the task manager?
Worth noting regarding Vista: I just last night installed a fresh copy of Vista Home Premium on my new RAID array. The basic steps I followed were installing drivers, installing the fix to allow the use of 4 GB of RAM, putting my remaining 2 GB of RAM in, rebooting and running windows update. After a single pass of Windows update, my system is totally stable playing empires for hours, and I have been running Prime95 for the past 2 hours.
My client used to crash a lot (it said something about memory). Installing this update fixed it. My client hardly ever crashes. The update I installed is in the Addresses address space issues one listed in rampantandroid's original post.
FWIW, I think that this patch was rolled into SP1. The fact that I'm on an SP1 install without this patch confirms this, I think (fresh SP1 install from sat. night). I'll email some guys at work to find out.
