You don't need to conclude anything here. Just free your mind and let it flow.

I can't tell if you're being stupid or you're just incredibly desensitized to stuff like that. Calling a German person a Nazi is a very grave insult, and a number of those people weren't using the term jokingly.

That's the thing. It begs that exact question, but it doesn't have the data to actually cause that conclusion.

Maybe you guys aren't as sensitive to spurious correlations as I am.

I can think of auxiliary graphs that actually show the rate of nazi-name-calling dropping as each of those notable events occur.

Unfortunately, I don't have that data, but the point is that this single graph tells us very little as to what is actually happening.

There's a graph. It's showing that a lot of people are using what's considered to be a very offensive term by a majority of people around the world. It's that people are using the word in the first place that's supposed to be appalling. It'd be similar to if there was a sudden explosion in use of the word "nigger" in Twitter. Most people would find it offensive if a large number of people called people from an African country niggers over the course of a sports match. Perhaps you're just too sensitive to the risk of drawing a conclusion that isn't fully supported.

Also, I can't imagine how you'd create a graph that shows the rate of people calling other people Nazis decreasing in that same span of time.

What's offensive about the word Nazi? It's offensive to call someone a Nazi, because it's regarded as an insult, but to use the word Nazi is not offensive in the slightest. Not even close to calling a black person a nigger. You can say Nazi in a history class, you can't say nigger. And when using Nazi as an insult people have gone past the point to refer to people as National Socialist but now has degenerated to just meaning "fascist". There's also issues with that graph in that Nazi is a very commonly used word, adding to the fact that there's also the probability that a good portion of those tweets were people saying "don't call Germans 'Nazis' " but since the graph only accounts for the use of the word and not the context, such a judgement as to the intentions of nazi users can't exactly be made. Now I understand it's offensive to a German to be called Nazi, but it goes without saying that anyone who actually thinks that is an ignorant idiot who's living 80 years in the past, and that really such an insult shouldn't really be taken so seriously. Some of my friends jokingly call me a Nazi sympathizer because I'm Argentinian, but that was 70 years ago and Juan Peron is long dead, and it doesn't make me sad.

Oh and don't worry, people were already throwing black hate around for African teams, or well at least the German fans were doing it against Ghana.

I said nigger in history class, I don't know what kind of school you went to, but mine wasn't about to try and shelter us from the culture and language that pervaded previous periods (oooo, I like that alliteration).

And even if it's 50% of the tweets calling Germans' Nazis and the other half is scolding them for calling them Nazis, that's still an awfully large amount of people using the word.

And keep in mind that I'm not one of the people being offended by it, but to say that people shouldn't be insulted by it is an awfully naive thing to say, especially when put in front of the modern context of a rise in Neo-Nazisim within the past decade and a half. There might be no more Nazis, but Neo-Nazis are certainly around. I myself certainly know a good number of people that would be offended if someone called them a Nazi.

Did you do it for the shock effect? If I said nigger in my school I'd probably have received a suspension. No race card bullshit, I was the darkest kid in my school because I lived in a white town, so there was no one to racially insult. It's a very serious racial slur that has more history than National Socialism and is 100% an insult. It's also absurd to boast about your school not sheltering you when you have an issue with the word Nazi, and somehow have friends who would seriously be offended being called one, but not being called a nigger. Not to mention non-blacks calling blacks niggers isn't "previous periods" in any way, Nazis are though, and Neo-Nazis are the laughing stock of most of the civilized world.

If someone actually takes offense with the word Nazi, then they have no idea what Nazi even means. Nigger still has meaning in our current society, being born black isn't a choice but fate, and that causes a lot of issues with this melting pot; being called a Nazi or a Fascist stopped having meaning when Mussolini and Hitler died. Being called a Communist as an insult would more offensive, and even that is nonsensical since the death of the USSR. I'd much rather be called a fascist, imperialist, commie, carpet bagger, nationalist, internationalist, anarchist, statist, than to ever be called a nigger (or beaner in my case).

And when I say nigger, I mean nigger. not the affectual "nigga". I mean "get off my lawn you dirty nigger before I shoot you" nigger, not "what's good nigga" nigga.

Wow, you must've went to a shitty school then. First, no, I didn't do it for a shock effect, I did it in history class where we learn about history and the word nigger plays an important part in American history. I also said it in my English class when reading Huck Finn because it's important to the book. Second, saying "It's also absurd to boast about your school not sheltering you when you have an issue with the word Nazi," after I clearly stated "And keep in mind that I'm not one of the people being offended by it," demonstrates some piss-poor reading comprehension on your part; I can't tell if you're actually reading the post or just the parts you want to pretend I'm saying. Third, at no point did I say that my friends wouldn't be insulted if they were called a nigger, and I didn't even mention my friends in the first place; I don't know where you got that idea out of, I'm reading my post and I can't find a single instance of the word "friend" in it. But if you want to talk about my friends, then no, my friends would feel certainly more insulted if I called them a nigger instead of a Nazi, but I certainly know other people (who are not necessarily my friends, apparently that wasn't clear enough to you) who would feel insulted if they were called a Nazi.

Have you ever met a Neo-nazi? Do you pay attention at all to what they do? You know, execute immigrants in Russia, shoot up synagogues in Kansas, tried to take over a town in North Dakota (and they almost pulled that one off too), the entire Golden Dawn party in Greece. To seriously call someone a Nazi is to say that they share beliefs with those people. And to say that they have those beliefs would be a grave insult to a number of people.

And if you want my personal view on it, then it's simply that I don't give half a flying fuck. Call me a nigger, beaner, spic, fag, Nazi, Commie, Amerikkkunt, cracker, honky, whatever. I don't think I've ever felt offended by someone calling me a name.

Well look what a great discussion a simple graph can start.

Sure some of today's neo-nazis are pretty much a laughing stock, but those are just the ones you see yelling around paroles. It's the ones not in the public eye you need to worry about. Those that lead political parties.

And yes, I'd be pretty much offended if someone called me a nazi. Sure I would be offended more by some other words, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't be offended at all.

What the fuck are you smoking son?
To call someone a nazi is to call someone pretty much the absolute worst. You're insulting their current beliefs, being, whatever. You are also making a comparison between them and one of the most murderous regimes in human history period.

Compare that to calling someone a nigger which is an insult based on skin colour and if used against a black person, usually signifies that the speaker is just an asshole. You are insulting ones heritage, maybe what this persons long dead ancestors did and stuff he had no hand in whatsoever.

ITT most Eurofags don't see the big deal in the word Nigger, most Amerifags don't see the big deal in the word Nazi. That's honestly all I'm getting from this thread.

I wouldnt know about britbongs, but even without a big black immigrant or slave history, Poland has its share of racial slurs aimed at them. they are also extremely offensive. ( poles have slurs for something, what a suprise, I know). You have/had people using them as well. Bonus points for them being used by teens/tweens in the same way its used in ghettos. Nigger isnt america specific.

Yeah, it feels like euroland does some pretty serious nazi self censorship. I'll admit I underestimated it.
