Most people who make maps and models take an existing design and duplicate it.

start by trying to recreate your own house. then your friends house. then your school / collage / workplace.

    that should get you started

Well, I'm not getting as much done as I should be, but I'll keep plugging away.

I'm going to have to admit I'm a nubberskate.

    *links that no longer work*

Just in case anyone out there actually wants to bother poking at it. I doubt it, though.

    Bump from ancient history!

I got off my lazy ass and did some work on the map. It's in better shape than ever. Among other things, I figured out how big I want a city block to be. A big help, that. I then made myself some spiffeh (suckeh) sidewalks, and started sticking roads in.

I'll update the first post in the thread soon. Note that I'm accepting assistance in the creation of buildings and city blocks. Someone's already offered the possibility of a broken-topped skyscraper (fun!) with, obviously, the appropriate level of destruction in the nearby area.

Feel free to ask to have access to the map to make a single building, or perhaps even a whole darn city block. Remember to check the first post in the thread for instructions on how to go about this, though.

I've found that in making your first few maps in hammer, you need a good plan, and start with the ground-up, literally. When I first started my new map, all I did was make the parking lot ground look good, then I moved on to making the bunker, and then the warehouse, then the tunnels, and then the watchtower. All of these were worked out on paper previously so I had a good idea what I was trying to do in Hammer. If not, most things just seem more like tiny addons that don't really go with the map.

It's like how an architect needs blueprints to build a building.

    I know these things.

But I'm talking about approximately 20 blocks worth of buildings needing done. That's quite a bit to draw out and blueprint. I'd probably get locked up for drawing that many buildings on paper.

Are you planning on making every building enterable?
You can sign me up for one if you need the help, just PM me the details.

At least most buildings enterable. If you want, you can just make "whitespace" by having un-enterable rubble heaps that just kinda look cool and provide some nice amazingly-still-standing wall sections for cover, and entertain silly jeep drivers with their 3-phase and their I need to get some sleep it's almost 2:00 AM and I have a test tomor... today.

Yeah. I'll PM you the details.

You know, a project like this could really use some rubble and ruin models. Rebars and doorways and rubble piles, and things like that.

Very true. I was thinking most cases could just have displacements w/ rebar and such sticking out, among other things.

Such models are found in the props_debris folder.

I know. I haven't quite gotten around to sticking them out of random objects yet, though.
