Want to leave something in the game for good?

Here, throw in your name suggestions for the following weapon pairs.

    2-slot/3-slot railgun.
    2-slot/3-slot HEMG.
    2-slot/3-slot Homing ML.
    2-slot/3-slot Ranged CN.
    ..........etc (any other 2-slot/3-slot pair)

In fact, if you think any other weapon deserves a better name, just throw it in.

Keep in mind, there are two names for a single weapon : "Weapon name" and "Research name".

    Example :
    2-slot/3-slot UML
Research name: "Upgraded Missile Warhead" "Heavy-duty Missile Warhead"
Weapon name: "Upgraded ML" "Heavy-duty ML"

EDIT : Naming isn't my profession, that means any proper suggestion will most likely be used.

Railgun -> impulse canon and then the upgraded version overcharged impulse canon ( research should be electro magnets -> enhanced capacitors )

rename the infantry HMG to LMG, because of it's small calibre (does only dmg infantry, HMG is capable of damaging light vehicles aswell!)

i agree that "railgun" does't really fit the icon nor really the concept - but impulse cannon? O.o
(at least it's nearer at the concept, but could we not just made a real railgun/gauss cannon?! - atm it's useless research compared to ranged cn anyway!)

a good railgun could have a high reload time (lets say the rail needs to be cooled down^^) while offering max projectile speed that doesn't break the engine, high damage but good amount of heat created - while average weight (remember, railgun projectiles doesn't need propelant & case) is keepd

    I see some nice names.

If there are no competitors, I think I'll use a lot of them.

What about overcharged railgun? I feel railgun is a little too classic.
I'd take those research names though.

Id recommend making the 3 slot plasma MG a plasma beam. Lightning made a very good demonstrative weapon out of it that would look cool in game.

an impulse is a change of force, since its electrical I assume they use an electrical engine to generate force. Then capacitator research is to increase the preload of energy thus increasing the acceleration.

why rename them in the first place? it will mainly cause confusion. nukes are still called nukes tho they have been renamed HIT several years back.
you may not like the names, you might think they should have been called differently from the start, but thats what their names are now.

It's more of a case we went through this already with infantry weapons... seems like we already forgot about that.

May I just suggest a prefix of "heavy" to most 2 slot weapon names to get the appropriate 3 slot one?

That would maintain consistency for players, and reduce confusion about what is what. The 2 and 3 slot weapons need to be relatable... And easy to associate that one is a direct upgrade of the other...

Plasma cannon & Heavy plasma cannon.
Upgraded missile launcher & heavy missile launcher.
Extended range cannon & heavy Extended range cannon.
High Explosive cannon & high explosive heavy cannon.

Salvo missiles should be changed to "multiple missile launcher" & "salvo missile launcher" for 2 slot and 3 slot respectively

As for railguns? Simples. 2 slot Railgun. 3 slot Rail-cannon

I like the use of "autocannon" for all 3 slot anti vehicle machine guns. "Machine gun" at 2 slot level, and "autocannon" at 3 slot level.

E.g. high explosive machine gun & high explosive autocannon.
Biological machine gun & Biological autocannon.

My only input is that any names should be extremely obvious. I don't want another research like Heavy Caliber MG or whatever it is under Projectile Physics for DU MG. If it gives me ER CN then it better damn tell me that in the name. And I'm also against more realistic naming like making said ER CN something like '100mm aerodynamic shells' or some bullshit because it should be extremely obvious at a glance (especially with our shit interface) what each research gives you.

So Extended Range Cannon should be Extended Range bloody Cannon. Every bit of information as to why I should give two shits about that research right there.

And what VulcanStorm said regarding prepending Heavy for 3 slot versions of weapons. Simple and fast conveying of information, following same argument as above.

On a side note I don't think names for the most part need changing at all, just for differences in 2 or 3 slot and any stinkers we have lying around.

Simply using "heavy" prefix for all tier-3 weapons makes it look lazy and amateur, allow me to be straight here.
I have nothing against prefix, because it is indeed very straightforward, but at least use different prefixes.

I agree that research name should somewhat contains the weapon name.

Now, as for weapon name itself.
Again, we are too used to the existing names.
Railgun is good and classic, I'd like to keep that. I just want a nice prefix for it.
HE cannon is good as well.
But is ER CN suggesting that its trajectory is almost a straight line? Does it actually have extended range? No, you can't even use it like an arty cannon.(but HE can)

We just accepted those names as they are, like our life.

Ask new players what they think a Plasma CN does, it might surprise you.

    Keep the names coming.

But extended range cannon does have an extended range compared to all the other cannons, along with shooting straighter.

Heavy as a prefix might look a tad lazy but giving all the 3 slots a different prefix kinda defeats the purpose a bit. You can either have vets yelling for 3 slot whatever even though it's not mentioned in the research tree really or have them yell for the "heavy" variant. That's what this really boils down to.

Just label everything as a "Tier" "T1" is standard, "T2" is Meds, "T3" is heavies. Boom. Solved.

    Ex-fucking-actly, you know the shit.
I don't hate prefixes, but I also don't want prefixes everywhere.

Some weapons will have prefixes, but others will use more variant names.

    Like Trump's
2-slot UML - AT-Dragon Missile Research: AT missiles
3-slot UML - TOW missile Research: Improved AT Missiles
If there are no other competitors I'll use them.

Slot-size already suggests that, so I think we don't need an extra label.

@Sgt.Security Railgun and Rail-cannon. Rail cannon being the 3slot.

The thing is... 3 slot weapons(except mgs) can only be used on heavy tanks.... Hence a "heavy" prefix for heavy tank weapons makes a lot of sense...

If not a prefix of heavy, then it certainly has to imply a substantial improvement over the smaller version. "Upgraded", "advanced".

There is nothing wrong with naming consistence in games. If anything, it helps players understandhow things relate. A "heavy" > "normal" > "standard"

And for extended range? Maybe use "long range cannon" for the 2 slot, and "extended range cannon" for the 3 slot.

The point is... A weapon name should describe exactly what it does in game, leave the lore and fancy wording to the description paragraph. And it should do that as succinctly as possible. No unnecessary words.
