when I look into fog/smoke my fps drop by 60 percent. Is there any way to turn off fog/smoke, or atleast turn it down? Its not my drivers, I updated, and rolled back to a version I knew work; but still nothing.

Smoke is simply a problem in all games - it does some basic physics on them usually, and physics in large part can get thrown at your videocard, thus causing serious issues. Smoke in past has also made some serious problems with lag as well....I can think of many jokes, comics and videos making fun of how smoke lagged CS out.

I should hope there is no way to turn it off, as that defeats the purpose of smoke...no offense meant to you, but I think its really an unfair advantage, akin to hacking.

I'd suggest a few things, as well as having a few Q's:

    What videocard/CPU do you have?

Turn down the resolution, antialiasing, filtering, turn of VSync if you have it on. I'd also suggest overclocking your videocard if you can, as I OC'ed my 7800GT, and saw a considerable jump in my graphics performance in Oblivion, at full settings.

Hmm...I know Niarbeht uses a 6600GT (PCIe) and has his overclocked....you'll have to ask him how he does.

What resolution do you run Emp at?

I don't get it. I have a broken radeon 9800 piece of shit, and I get NO lag in smoke in source games at all. It baffles me.

You're either a lucky S.O.B. or half-blind or stupid... I get huge frame drops with lots of smoke. Damn sprites kill fps. :( Perhaps bigger sprites and less of them?

I guess I'm lucky :) It's like this; source games=no lag in smoke/good framerate at medium settings, all HL mods=HUGE lag in smoke and ok fps.

Smoke grenades currently are kind of ghey. Your best option is to just look away.

Naw, there's bound to be some setting you can change to make the smoke look more ugly and save your system from burning down.
