All props go to avair for finding this, btw. I'm horrified and amazed at the same time. That giant bug in fight #18 is a Weta, they're rare and actually perfectly harmless and docile to humans. Some of these things are freaky as all get out. This... is awesome/horrifying, that's the best way i can describe it. http://www.japanesebugfights.com/ Japanese Bug Fighting. Only in Japan.
I THOUGHT it was a giant weta. But it has wings, so now I'm not sure. And I figured it was pretty amazing that they could get their hands on a Weta in the first place, especially for what are essentially blood sports. Because those things are pretty rare, maybe even endangered, and that CANT be kosher in most places. the more i study the pictures the more i think that is NOT a weta. Which is a shame cause those things are awesome/horrifying. WHILE WE'RE ON THE TOPIC!!! What's more awesome/horrifying then bugs attacking each other? Eating bugs.
the youtube video lists it as a "Giant Weta," but when i google images of giant wetas you can clearly see that none of said wetas have wings. I'm not ruling out the possibility that it is SOME species of weta, but i dont think it's the largest species. Which makes sense I guess, because the biggest is like the size of a small person's hand, and it would probably just pwn that much harder.
and i dont know why... odd. Well, wetas and witchetty grubs. I want to eat a witchetty grub. Although if actually confronted with a live grub... i'd probably chicken out. "The raw witchetty grub tastes like almonds and when cooked the skin becomes crisp like roast chicken while the inside becomes light yellow, like a fried egg."
