Hello, The biggest problem why the 1.08 server is empty so often, seams to be quite simple. May people want to play, but all of them don't, because the server is empty. I have an additional problem too. I'm doing anything, except of playing empires, on my Linux system, and I always have to reboot, start Steam and start Empires to know, if anybody is playing. This sucks Would it be possible to display the number of people playing somewhere on this website? (don't know how difficult this would be to realize) If, in addition, there would be a button like "I want to play" and a number which indicates, how many people are "willing to play", it would be even better. If this is too much work, just forget about it, but maybe it's quite simple and could be realized quickly.
This is not too much work, there are plug ins to make it happen. http://www.serverspy.net/site/servermonitor.html
Just go here: http://www.game-monitor.com/GameServer/75.126.116.74:27015/Empires_1.08_Beta_RC_15.html We have a bunch of those links (my bookmarK) in BSID's clan-only section of our forums. Perhaps, it would seem, that BSID always has what is needed! Huzzah! </weird>
Things I would like This to run on Active Desktop (Completed) This to look good (Now Complete) I now suggest Game-Monitor, Bojangles wins (at least for free software)
Here's an example of using Game-Monitor with Active desktop (sorry if it ruins smaller resolutions, I cut it down) The background picture is from Sarajevo
You dont have to start Empires to see the amount of players; just add the server to favorites and you can just rightclick the Steam tray icon and click Servers to see it. Much faster than starting the mod.
That still requires you to start up steam, and some people may not wish to do this, such as Metalhead, because he is running Linux and must go through a large hassle to do so.
So don't use Linux all the time? I have steam on auto-startup, and while starting takes a bit of time, it did that before I had steam anyway.
xterm cd ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Steam wine Steam.exe Better yet, make a shell script to do it. xterm sh steam.sh Or add a shortcut to the desktop or menu of whatever WM/desktop he uses. He can also have Wine run a virtual desktop, and then windowshade the virtual desktop to get it out of his way. Sadly, though, I've had problems with Steam being a bitch to me in Linux in the past, mostly from my dialup though.
Yeah Niar, I feel bad for you. You'd have to wait for a couple minutes just to download the server list to see if anyone is playing. Sucks. What's so wrong with the game-monitor idea?
Actually, my problem was that I had to delete my clientregistry.blob almost every time I started Steam. That's a long, boring download.
clicking http://gametiger.net/search?mod=empires&game=all will show you all 1.07 AND 1.08 servers. Very easy.
