The Song of Ice and Fire series - George RR Martin Fair bit of both David Eddings and David Gemmel I've also read all of Conn Igguldun's (sp) books I know the obvious choice is Lotr, but I never managed to get into those Also, I don't dislike sci-fi, but historical/fantasy means I don't have to criticize the science behind it
I suggest reading 30 peer reviewed articles about eastern europe, then typing a big essay about it, then emailing it to me. Seriously though.... lets see. I assume you've read 1984. If you haven't, smack yourself, then read it. Same with anything by Richard Wright, or A Clockwork Orange, The Lord of the Flies, or the Old Man and the Sea. (which is like 5 pages, you should be able to read that on the shitter, and the only hemingway i actually enjoyed) Ok, you MUST read these, at some time in your life: Catch-22 A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius The Watchmen These I found interesting, but not on the top of my list Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead Ender's Game (if you like the feel of the Halo storyline, you'll like this... I think halo was very... VERY inspired by it.) The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time Slaughterhouse Five is a bit odd, but interesting nonetheless. IF you haven't seen the movie, then The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest I could never bring myself to finish all the king's men or the great gatsby. I was just bored to tears by the end of them. Same goes with The Sun Also Rises. (A bunch of guys wandering around going fishing not talking about their feelings... lots of exciting content there).
I just finished Heart of Darkness. I dare you. Double-dog dare you. ...Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency was fun.
I can suggest The Dark Tower series by Stephen King, the series spans across seven books, it was a pretty damn good read, & hard to put down once you get into it. Other Stephen King novels I suggest are The Eyes of the Dragon Cell Salem's Lot (Ties in with The Dark Tower series) The Long Walk John Grisham's The Firm was also pretty good =o
oh bleayuch, I couldn't even get half way through heart of darkness, it's another one that i just couldn't get into. Meh, I saw a fatass bald and crazy marlon brando, that's almost as good. I can't remember, but the Grisham novel that had a tom cruise movie made out of it-- not the movie, but the book was good. I'd rather stick forks in my eyes then watch the movie with cruise. That, and the Pelican Brief, those are his only novels which I've read. But I liked em.
The Hungry Catapillar Mighty Maths: Let's Learn to Count Book 1 The North Cumbria Phone Book Unabridged Oxford English Dictionary Volume III: "the letters M - T" April 32nd 2004 TV listings This is pretty much the list my crazy physics teacher told us to read at the end of last year
you gotta read the Philip Pullman novels which inspired this film http://www.goldencompassmovie.com/ the books are seriously better than the film. The northern lights, The subtle knife and the amber spyglass...............
I prefer the childhood classics, such as "Everybody Poops." Alternatively, you could try reading "Nobody Poops but You." And for the catholics out there, you could try reading "You're a Naughty Child and that's Concentrated Evil Coming out the Back of you.*" *oh damn it the link has the reference in it. :p
David Gemmel IS..or sadly, was.. the Don, and i'll have words with anyone who says otherwise. It's a shame but alot of fantasy writers seem to have died recently - Robert Jordan, David Gemmel etc and some did not finish their last big series' As a result, a lot of the series I would have recommended remain unfinished so are not really viable (even tho some of the books are a really good read). My favourite fantasy authors, in no particular order: Janny Wurts: Various (wars of light and shadow series has just been completed), Master of Whitestorm Michael Scott Rohan - Winter of the World series Katherine Kerr - Deverry series Tad Williams - Memory, Sorrow & Thorn Terry Brooks - Shannara series's (first two series are the best, voyage and druid of shannara series' have yet to deliver) Margaret Weis/Tracy Hickman - Dragonlance series (the three original and three successive (twins series) are the best) Terry Goodkind - Sword of Truth series (some books are good - e.g. 1-4 best, 6 good if you agree with the ethos) Well, i've got to the point where i've read so much fantasy that I can't remember some of the series' (even some good ones )...so i'm sure i've left some out.
The vast majority of terry pratchett's books are god awesome, If you're interested in mysteries, works by chandler are the way to go.
