did you check your launch options to see if it anything is in there that may be causing this?
right click on empires in your library, choose properties, general tab, set launch options

Whilst I could be wrong, I'm pretty sure it doesn't support DX 8.1 still.

I didn't think so either but on the steam store the requirements says 8.1, if it doesn't support it, it should to be changed.

@joshuabasinger Try launching it with -dxlevel 90

I tried setting the launch option to dxlevel 90 it still stuck me on the status screen i then deleted it and it was set to 8.1 and still nothing i am just dumb struck cause all this started happening when i downloaded 2.31 i have checked my graphics card my direct x i have ran a diagnostic of my computer checked my firewall settings and still nothing it literally gets 1 bar away from completing sending my client info then it drops back down 4 bars and then goes back to 2 away and flickers between 3 away and 2 bars away and all the while i can hear in game sounds and hear people having discussions

Well you should be able to run Empires

Try and add these commands to the launch options: -windowed -noborder

They'll launch the game windowed, which may help you get rid of the flickering?

    Try -autoconfig.

Can you run CS:S with -dxlevel 90?

I had a netbook with nvidia 9300 (or 9400) chipset, that could run COD4 on very very low settings. Did send it back, because the fan never stopped and energy-saving techniques where broken.

I thought a "modern" Intel chipset graphics card was already more powerfull than a low end AMD card from 2002, my bad.

Hey there. I have a similar problem as this fellow.

Like he says, you end up stuck on the loading screen. I will even hear the sounds of gameplay within the game (rifles firing, explosions etc) but regardless of anything, I remain stuck with the loading screen.

I've played this game for ages and I don't think I need to say that I have never had this problem before in the past. I run windows 7, tried disabling my usual launch parameter (-dx level 80), uninstalled, reinstalled, and I get no different results. I think it's safe to say that it's a bug with the newest steam version (I was able to play the new steam version with no problems, before).

I'm not quite sure what's up but I'm pretty hopeful you guys'll be able to solve it and fix it.

Use -autoconfig if you played with lower dxlevels

I should've replied sooner than now.

This got things working for me again, but unfortunately, I just can't play Empires even on the lowest (recommended) settings. The framerate drops to 1 or 2 a second and just flat out stops some of the time.

I can barely get by with just 4 frames a second on World of Tanks, but I just can't accomplish anything on Empires.

If the developers could fix this current bug preventing me (and probably others) from using the -dxlevel 80 command in the launch options, it'd really be a help.
