So I picked this shitty PII up from school surplus, my only laptop. I'm looking to try and Pimp it. I runs hl1 ok I guess, at 640x res in video mode and lags badly in some ares. It BARELY runs homeworld, the cutscenes lag hardcore. The battery is overused I get only 15-35 minutes on the battery, the ram and the harddrive are easly doable. I'm looking to increase the laptops over all power, CPU and Graphic wise. I'm a IT student and normal Desktops are easy as shit but laptops... They scare me... their internal design is just hateful. Hell I still have nightmares about that Compaq PII I disassembled.. Ugh... Any ideas? CPU: PII 366mhz GPU: Neomagic Magicgraph 6.44MB of dedicated Memory Physical Ram: 93MB HD: 5.3GB
To be honest, laptops aren't really renowned for their upgradability I'm not even sure you could do much other than upgrade the RAM and the harddrive.
I had a P4 1.8ghz 512mb ram with a geforce4mx440 ran HL2 at 0-6fps..... My sister stole it when she left for texas..... last month.... usto play DoW on it -=o Actually, I first tried empires... 1.04? i think, last year before I got to play online in June-July... Batterys sucked tho. 45mins.
Upgrade your laptop? One that old? I doubt you'll get much out of it. Dedicated videocards for laptops only started to show up around the P3's and those weren't very customizable either. Hypothetically, you could replace the cpu, but odds are you won't find a suitable one nowadays. Post the laptop's type and number so I can look up if you can get some ram for it (probably edo-ram or sodimm sdram). But if you really want I could sell you my old P3 1ghz, 512 mb, Geforce2Go 32mb and a 20gb HD.
Would be cheaper and easier to buy L3TUC3's laptop than to try and upgrade that p.o.s. A school giving away laptops immediately raises a red flag for me. They either don't work at all, or are so old that they can barely run Windows 3.1. Heh, that would make a good "Yo Laptop" joke. Yo Laptop is so slow, Windows has to get out and push.
Alright sounds like a plan, I can give my dad this one and use the one I get from you. I did a little reseach, upgrading the CPU would be impossible since the PIIs used a unique socket, my CPus model had the highest clock out of all of them.
