Namely, Red Alert 2 and Yuris Revenge

Regretably, it seems my computer refuses to load up the setup program....

It screams something about Direct X operations not compatible but doesnt specify which ones then crashes and burns

anyone remember which Direct X was out when RA2 and YR were out?

    Um....that shit's old...Direct X 4? O.o I don't know
Try changing some of the compatibility settings or whatever (under "Properties">"Compatibility")

Install windows xp in vmware player and play it there. it has directx virtualization and it should be fast enough to run those games.

ahh but theres the rub... I already have XP running, but it appears (from many web searches) that Service Pack 2 andup bitch at old games.

Also this is a school comp and i need to keep certain programs on and off or I wont get the security deposit for this year

I can run it fine on XP with DX9.0.
Just run it in XP compatibility.

Tanktics was made in 1999 and it uses DX6. I've managed to get it working on windows 7 x64.

RA2 needs DX7 but since most versions are backwards compatible that shouldn't be the problem ...
    Maybe your CD is damaged?

I had the same problem, so I just pirated the C&C decade pack and installed RA2:YR and used the serial key I had from my origional copy.

I have the decade pack and they all work (legitimately). I wouldn't particular consider that piracy if you had the original and it doesn't work, but then my moral compass is somewhat flexible.

I don't give a rats ass. If it was a struggling company i'd advocate rebuying their stuff just to keep them afloat, but otherwise? As long as you don't like pirate the thing to play a game you have, then play Generals on top of it (older games is ok tho), then I doubt you can really be doing that much wrong.

You can choose what games of the decade pack you want to install, so to stay moral you can just select the games you own and use the serials you own. No harm done.

    Suuure.

Aeoneth, try to run it in like Win2K compat, or just pirate a copy; yours might be damaged. Alternatively I'm unsure if you HAVE to install DX5/6/7 if you have DX9/10.

It's either or but I think there had been issues that DX7 stuff didn't run proberly on DX8 systems, I doubt this is the issue though, but w/e try it, it shouldn't need to long, but don't forget to install DX11/10/9 again if you are done playing

What I don't get is that I ran Ra2 on my Vista and XP systems (Xp SP3, VSP2), and it went fine.

directx9 is downward compatible to dx6 afaik - since its "only" XP THIS shouldnt be the issue ...

woah.. okay so I get back from work today and took a look at the the disc (don't know why I didn't before)

There's a fucking scratch almost down the middle of both the soviet and allied discs. Yuri's looks okay but I can't tell without RA2.

I think I will "pirate" my own version and use my CD key... maybe burn it onto a new disc (or two) and stick a shiny red/blue sticker on for good measure.

In the mean time I have to go beat my brother for mishandling my discs
