I think it would be neat to actually see the range of your own placed engineer cameras and radars as you are choosing the spot to build it on. Right now, you can only roughly guess their range. I suggest adding a green/red/some other colour (perhaps blue is the best visible?) circle depicting the range in first person view and/or the same on the minimap.
Would it appear like the bubble TF2 uses? I am all for it but that seems a little hard to make without it bugging out every opportunity.
That would be even better. We wouldn't have an exact bubble since there are pitch limitations, but it would still be purdy kewl. Hell, I think it'd be fine if they just traced the edges of the boundaries. One at level pitch, one at the highest and another at the lowest.
I'm not saying it's a bad idea or anything, I just don't entirely know how useful people expect this to be. I don't think I've ever placed a turret in Empires and gone "oh, I'd better place it a bit closer over there to make sure I have coverage of that area", because Empires doesn't tend to play out like that. Obviously as a commander it's different because you're placing multiple turrets and you want to make sure you're efficient with your turret limit, but the commander already gets the radius rings. I just couldn't see myself needing it as an Engineer.
I find myself wanting that constantly. If my turret goes down on uneven ground, then it might be useless since turret pitch is merciless. It's the same with building any turrets at elevation. I was playing rage and a bunch of engys built mls in that high middle flag to presumably fire down on the no man's land. I literally asked the question, "can those even fire down there?" Right now, there's no way to know without testing. Likewise, if I'm setting up a lvl3mg, I need to know its range since enemy grens will immediately try to exploit that range limitation.
Of course, but the gren has to physically be out of range. Maybe that's easy on an open map. It's much harder as the map gets more cramped.
but isnt line of sight more important then range then? unless you want to maximize distance ofc, but i dont really see why, even 2/3rd of its distance would cost you too much health to take a chance at sprinting (talking lvl1). the feature would be nice nevertheless. it would help people understand the tools they are using better, how could one be against that?
I don't know, I mean if it's easy to add then sure why not? Otherwise I'm kinda with trickster, I never really needed to know exactly where it ends, I have a pretty good idea of the range already. Even if I didn't most of the time locations are either really large and there isn't a good way to maximize the potential, or distances are short enough the turrets going to hit most things in the area. Knowing pitch might be good though, I'm still not to sure what the angle is, I just know it feels kinda inconsistent. I never bother with mortars unless someones next to them, use rpgs, it's easier.
Have empty set up a particle 1/4th sphere around the player covering all of the players visible range. Player enters drop turret mode and the particles fire and loop until the player cancels or drops.
But you are not a very good Engineer. *shots fired* When I am super serious, I always exploit every bit of my knowledge/experience of this game on my enemies, it's a sign of respect too. For example, when I am tailing an enemy APC, I'd try to keep my vehicle on the side so I can instantly run over whoever comes out.
