Request: lava texture/light effect/particle effect

    Anyone know how to make one?
    Or actually, anyone willing to make one?

    It's for 4 relatively big pools of lava deep down below. They're not part of the map (unless you fall into it), they can not be seen from up close (unless you fall into it), but players would have a clear view on them (unless they fall into them).

    Bonus points for anyone who can make lumps of rock and lava shooting out of them randomly and falling down to the ground, killing anyone they hit.

    now if only i knew how to get THAT from substance to source without it losing all the details.
    but youre quite good with vmts silk, i can give you all the texture maps for it?! message me on steam if i forget to message you :)

    You can generate all of the necessary maps right? Diffuse, normal, specular? I think Source may have parallax support

    well i only added a heightmap because i could. i think source has no inbuilt parallax support, when empires used parallax mapping we had to use a special compiler.

    also generating/exporting the maps isnt the issue, its merely two clicks. setting up the material is.
    itd need "diffuse", normals/bumps, emission, and specularity.

    but yeah, its not that its hard (i guess), its just time consuming as you have no wysiwyg editor in source.
    if only it would undestand sbar files :S

    It think that wouldn't look too generic at all. It might show an obvious repeating pattern on a large surface, but on it's own it looks good.

    Wasn't gonna show pics as there's a big chance i'll never finish the map, i've done like 10% and i'm already tired of working on it, but as i had some made for kidpaler, this is what the lava would be for:

    i can make the details smaller and on a 2048 (or even 4096 if source can take it) texture, so there is no need to tile it much in the first place. up to 3x3 tiling the pattern is not overly bad.

    so you are good with the general look? i didnt know what kind of lava you wanted.

    and another question stays, are you good with just getting the texture maps or do you need a material?

    To be honest, if you can be bothered, i would prefer the material. If you do i'll promise i'll try to finish the map that little bit harder.
    Actually with a nice looking lava texture, i actually might want to finish it just for that. People need to buuuuurn.

    Hmm ... having a scream sound when someone falls in ... yes would be fun

    Edit:
    All my textures are 2048*2048, can't remember wether that was an engine limitation or personal choice though.

    Wish I could help; I did a bit of work on an animated glowing/pulsing lava material on an old map, but i don't have that computer for the time being. I can tell you that my experiments making it a material based light source ended up with nothing useful, the light comes out too patchy unless it's applied to a simple rectangular brush face. Better to just use static lights to give it the glow.

    I'm currently using that last one, and it's fine.

    Flasche's has a much better rock-look to it instead of just liquid fire, but i think it's fine.
    Would record a 10 second vid if i knew how.

    i have an issue. it seems like $selfillum textures do not receive light so the normals are not functioning.
    without glowing lava it looks incredibly shit in shadows and without normals it looks flat (and shit).

    and i dont even have glossiness in yet ...
