    OP as fuck because ramps can be used as infantry "towers". Stand on ramp-> have superior vision gg boys

    I had thought about this sometime last year. Though I was thinking of a system where you'd right click on walls and add a ramp onto them. Here's a mockup from last year.
    In the end I decided it wouldn't work well enough with all the various map types.

    Yeah, the potential to break some maps makes this a no no. Gates would work better with how empires plays out, something automatic like in age of empires.

    How exactly would this break maps?

    I remember a thread which this wasnt its main topic and many people wanting this, now there is a thread with this as a main topic and everybody saying how we dont want this.

    tf?

    Its not like it needs to be any higher than walls?
    So how would this break maps? How would it be something different than placing a wall?

    I would prefer stairs though, just like few segments of a wall looking like stairs. Although vehicles going through ramps seems also fun and nice.

    Main thing is someone building a ramp to completely bypass enemy walls, the reason you'd do a ramp instead of deconing it makes it so the enemy team can't simply plug it back up. What paradox said about infantry holds a lot of truth too. or maybe not as much, the other team would do the same thing, so it would be like now, but higher up I guess.

    You may be right about it not really breaking maps though, I can't think of too many things that actually are low enough that you could get by with a normal wall. Bootybay changes a lot, but that's the only thing I can think of. I think I just assumed that it increase the potential for someone to fly off the ramp with a jeep or something getting past stuff.

    Clip works on players not vehicles. So ramps would allow you to exploit where a clip would have stopped players from going. It wouldn't be a major thing. I can only think of a few spots on a very few maps where you could do this.

    Other then that ramps could be a lot of fun. Ramps + turbo = the rebirth of Empires.

    How about restricting it so that it cant be built next to enemy buildings/walls, if thats possible.

    I would rather prefer to put the "figure out" mindset on this, rather than only focus on all the situations where this would be bad and then close the book...as it usually is with suggestions here.

    What I always had in mind is just to make the same stairs segment as you could build with walls, to give this ability to the comm, simply because he cant limit the height.

    I still dont get how what paradox said is any bad thing. Like you said, both teams can do the same and I dont see anything bad about that.

    I do however agree that ramps could do unexpected things with vehicles, but thats why I would prefer the wall stairs. Although I think ramps would be worth just trying/testing with vehicles.

    Clip stops everything. There are specific clips for players, vehicles and bullets too though.

    Make it commander placeable, voilá! You can't place it close to enemy walls.

    There are vehicle clips as well in the Hammer Editor. emp_nuclear and emp_escort both use them. And crossroads. And emp_streetsoffire.
    Because people like to 9mine stuff.

    Yeah but most maps we have just used player clip. Pretty much any place where people would 9 mine vehicles to.


    But any way... The fun level would be > to any possible exploits or other negative issues that would pop up. Ramps would allow people to have some fun and possibly seed the server. Give back turbo, add ramps, Then later give us loops.

    Wall stairs are something I can get behind. Standing on walls and building them up is kinda common, stairs would alleviate 2 problems with it though. One is it gets rid of unable to actually jump all the steps due to no stamina, and the other is it makes it more obvious that you can in fact get to places with walls which is probably one of empires oddities that new players know nothing about for a while.

    I suggested gates again though because from what bigteef was saying he wanted something to make it easier for vehicles to get in and out of bases.

    + the problem when comm wants to block a passage but still wants his own team to get through.

    Which is my main point.

    Even better would be, to be able to set maximum height for walls as comm.

    But, anyway with the stamina thing. I dont think you can actually make such smooth stairs with the usual walls so that you dont have to jump.
    I kinda think that whatever what looks like stairs in hl2 and you can simply walk up is actually a ramp, but I might be wrong.
    I think its only for player movement though, if you would drop a physics object it would act like on a stairs, but player movement acts like on a ramp.
    + I think if it would be walkable like that, you could also move vehicles over it.
    Might be wrong here though.

    I have to kinda agree here, we have already ditched many fun things because abuse/exploits.
    I just always hate how we cant have nice things because people abuse D: ...even in real life, heh... but thats how it is xD

    Nothing wrong with tanks going where they shouldn't

    like straight over the enemy map ramp in crossroads, or over tank traps and shit in other maps.

    I had an idea..
    Walls start at a set height then move up as they are built.
    Why not just lower 1 side of the wall. So that un-built wall will have 1 side slightly below ground. Also widen BE's walls to match the thickness of NF's. So that way 3-4 un-built walls side by side would make a ramp.

    Sorry for the necro but I thought is was better here then starting a duplicate thread.

    Not sure why you would want ramps unless you want to use them for getting vehicles over obstacles. And even then, the ramp would have to be really long in order for any heavy vehicle to climb the ramp.

    + Modeling required
    + Coding required
    + GUI required

    Angry showed us that modelling can be done by hammer and we can bypass modelers for simple stuff.

    You should have the option of placing both types of 'walls' down, one with the ramp cut into it and one without.
