The radar would give spot all enemies within its range, this would show where all the enemy within the radar's range are to friendly soldiers. Currently radars are only really useful for research, their vehicle spotting functions are not very useful.Pros: Reduces tiresome micromanaging More tactical radar placement Scout sabotage of radar actually has a negative effect Helps a team defend an area Makes ninjaing a commander harder (?) Cons: Makes ninjaing a commander harder (?) Useless if commander gives targets himself Alternatives: Allow overlapping radars to act as one area Edit: updated post with Fricken Hampster's corrections
Scout sabotaging a radar DOES have a negative effect. The sabotaged radar essentially switches teams in terms of radar functionality. It no longer shows the enemy team where your team is, and instead shows your team where the enemy is. Do proper research first And no, this is a bad idea. Commander wallh4x are bad enough. Automating it so much worse.
First off I know that id does that, but how useful is that really? You might switch to scout to sap the turrets/barracks/VF of a base but the radar is always a target of opportunity rather than a goal. The idea is to make radars more useful as radars rather than research stations, and given that targets are about the only way intel seems to reliably help infantry and tanks giving them to the radar is the only way I can see of making them have a useful intel role. At the moment their radar functions seem tacked onto their research functions, resulting in a building that is only built once at the start and only rebuilt when destroyed. And while commander wallh4x are in the game they will be used. If you don't use them you are impeding your teams efficiency, like refusing to get rails despite being in electrical engineering (if rails were 'cheap').
The wallh4x are planned to be removed IIRC, so in essence your suggestion is to replace a lesser evil with a higher evil
On the commander wallhacks debate, can't we accept that some of the wallhacks are satellite imaging? A radar-based wallhack seems thematically reasonable. If it's too strong, maybe create some conditions where it doesn't work (cover, small target stays still) or decrease the radius of the wallhack?
The wallhack debate has shit all to do with making it fit story wise. It's purely gameplay. Not to mention, the Empires backstory is fairly different. Give the Storyline and Atmosphere section a good read. The stickies and stuff by DonMegel and Angry are canon, and the stuff I wrote is non-official-but-based-closely-on-the-canon. Not really sure about other writers in there.
Don't you love it how Thread makers NEVER give REAL cons to their own suggestions. It's always "makes ninjaing harder (?)" or "discourages people to buy jeeps (not really a con)". I don't think anyone should be able to give targets other than the commander, or maybe he squad leader. How will your idea work? Lets say you wanted to give orders to your troops, TOO BAD! they are next to a radar, so the radar attack orders supercedes the com's orders. And you name Micromanaging as a bad thing. It might get a little repetitive if you keep giving targets, but thats what the com is suppose to do. How hard is it to drag, and then shift a drag?
And how could we solve that epic problem :S? MAYBE BY HAVING TWO DIFFERENT COLOURS FOR THE ORDERS?! Think before you write. And com is not supposed to be a fucking wallhack machine, he should give strategic attack order for different squads, not wallhacking for people, it is retarded.
We already have orange targets, except they are not really targets, because noone commanded you to attack those. What if the com doesn't want you to attack targets near radar? It can get pretty confusing when you hear "attack these targets" twice with different solid diamonds
*Is - Fixed it for you You can see people behind buildings, behind vehicles, behind turrets, behind barricades, behind mountains, behind hills and inside buildings. Why shouldn't you be able to see peopple behind walls?
Now, I don't want to sound cruel.. But if you don't want people to flame you for everything you say, get your facts right before you post. See this video (the 2.2) http://www.moddb.com/mods/empires/videos See the red lines in commander mode? Those are wallhacks.
