gif will never be obsolete as long as it is the only "animated" image format (that is widely supported) that can remain so damn tiny.

 

Nah, HTML5 webms are destroying it, and Gifs are never tiny.

 

webms load so much faster

 

And look better

And produce sound

You can save a whole movie into a webm and it would take less space.
Of course the quality is dependent on the media you took it from.

That's a misconception, because of places like reddit and tumblr that completely ignore best practices in gif making. Heck, /r/highqualitygifs is absolutely retarded in my opinion - whoop-tee-doo your gif looks great AND it's 200MB or more.

Gifs should realistically be slightly larger than 1MB at most. Some quality is usually sacrificed, but if it was supposed to be high quality and 30 seconds long then it should be a video not a gif.

If quality is sacrificed for lowest size, then they usually are pixelated or the colours are scaled down a couple bits and frames are reduced making it look like FMVs from old CD video games.
