I figured I would tell you guys where I've gone.

I moved out of my residence room last night, it was very sad. Took me about 5 hours to pack up my car and clean the place too, which is after 2 van rides of stuff home.

I work at my university now, but they won't let me stay in residence because I'm no longer a student. That means I had to move home, for better and worse.

I only live a short car ride away, and I have most of the basement to myself, but there is one very serious problem.

    128kB/s DSL

I did a little speed test on it, and got this result, near ghastly!

That means no games for me, which is rather sad. I was used to 4mB down and 3mB up in residence. This is a bit of a change. Additionally, the computer with internet access is dasdardly slow, in terrible need of reformatting/vapourizing. It's a 950mhz Duron and various other crap. I've been doing what I can to speed it up, but I've lost a good deal of hair so far.

This all means that I won't be seeing you guys on the server any time soon. I'll try to get IRC up and running, but what's the point? I'm pretty close to taking a hammer to this computer any way. The mouse randomly double clicks too, what the crap?

While a bunch of my friends have graduated into grad school or co-op jobs, I'll be hanging out in my parent's basement. I knew the Internet would understand

You should load up EMP on your slow comp. You can still ref with a slow comp. Just not play.

124 k down and 72k up is not bad at all and definately capable of running empires... Though the computer probably won't be :P

Most of Britain are still running on those speeds and less (especially upload)

Dude, I was playing Emp the other day on a 51 kbs down 4 kbs up connection. It was a bit laggy, but still completely playable. EVOLVE BEYOND THE PROBLEM ;P

You can't complain, Niarbeht plays empires with a 56K modem... You can only complain when your high speed cable/dsl/whatever starts going slower than Niarbeht's modem.

if those are kb/s and not kbit/s then you will be absolutely fine.

I fixed up this computer something good. formatted the drives, got rid of the spyware, did a disk clean and disk scan, cleaned up the registry and disabled a lot of startup programs. It's not running like new or anything, but it's about the best I can do without reformatting.

Maybe I'll hook up my good comp for a game of empires...but downloading RC 20 will kill me

network speed isn't the bigger problem... 900mhz duron would not run HL2.exe very pretty at all.

    Lies.

    Or at least severely doubtable.

You were probably on a connection with 51 Kbps down and 33 Kbps up (also known as 5KBps down and 3 or 4 KBps up).

Either that or you had the world's SHITTIEST DSL connection.

And KT... Quit whining and play, nub. I'd kill for affordable iDSL, or even for ISDN.

Cable and the whole neighbourhood online/downloading.. I had that a couple of years ago. Turns out the "wijkcentrale" was connected to the headend using copper..
A huge undercapacity and everyone had around 30kbps. (on "broadband" :P)
Other side of the story was that I sometimes had 8mb(it)ps which was really fast at the time..
