I've herd this suggested a few times, and I'm just relaying it formally. The idea grew on me after a bit, what can I say... Make the commander opt-in/opt-out start in opt-out mode. So by default players aren't nominating themselves for command. Pros: emp_recruits won't accidentally get voted into command because they didn't know to turn it off. Cons: There might not be anyone to vote for the first few games after it's made the default.
what if no one looks at the command screen suspecting "someone" will be commander anyway and no one opts in and a new guy likes the big tank to drive over lots of players?
then they deserve to lose the game ALSO hide opt in/out in the options menu for the love of god we don't need noobs becoming commander - if they're smart enough to go into options, they're probably smart enough to command, or at least they can probably actually READ and THINK and stuff
