http://www.pcgamer.com/2012/01/05/x...ategy-game-from-the-creators-of-civilization/ So there is apparently going to be a new, proper XCOM game sometime in the future. Sounds pretty awesome.
That's pretty much what I thought. Then I remembered Civ V. At least they are making an effort to please us "oldies", one has to wonder if this had come about if their announcing the FPS hadn't kicked up the shitstorm it did.
I like civ 5, I gather it wasn't as complex as the other games but I certainly enjoy the hell out of playing it. Given that I never played the original XCOM (didn't know it existed until a couple of years ago) but I've heard about how... unintuitive it could be? Personally the idea of it getting the civ 5 treatment seems pretty good. One of the best things about civ 5 is that while it has lots of stuff in it, all of it works, one of the problems I hear all the time about xcom is that a lot of the stuff you could research or equip just wasn't really worth using as anything other than a stopgap. It's also a consistent problem with all of the xcom-inspired games I've tried, there is one way to win, and if you don't know what that way is in advance, you lose. The idea of an XCOM style tactics game with Civ5 levels of true openness, in the sense that all paths are valid, that's a pretty cool idea. Any new xcom game would obviously be heavily modernised, for good or ill, and frankly if civ5 is dumbed down? It's the least dumb dumbed down game I've ever played.
Gameinformer has some screens. Base pic is sorta boner inducing. Battlescape pic is kinda turnoff. Idno... Edit: Also: RPS has some stuff.
