Mod of the Year Awards

As far as Empires 2.0's release, all of us on the dev team are very satisfied with how things went. So far, we've seen approximately 800 players (according to Steam Stats) at once playing across 100 servers, and that is very exciting. I'm also glad to hear that most people have said they are enjoying the new release. There are several servers running with 48 max players featuring intense firefights and strategic teamwork. Once we move over to the Orange Box SDK when Valve releases the code, I'm certain we can have Empires supporting 64 players. If you have any issues, bugs, or suggestions for future Empires releases, please stop by our forums and let your voice be heard.

At most i've seen 829 players online, so that really is something!

Also on one of the 48 players servers (i think it was the MK server, which decreased server slots to 40), i had a ping of 29 while the server was full. I had no lag at all, and fps was around 50. The map was urbanchaos, so i'm not sure how it would play on bigger maps where nearly the entire map is visible. Still knowing this, i'm sure we can have 64 players in some future release.

How can a mod like this not win?

 

A congratulations is in order for all those admins who got their servers up so soon. There always seems to be 4 or 5 nearly-full servers, and all with a ping below 50. They've done a great job in accommodating all the players who joined us with this latest release.

I think we definitely have a better shot at a lot more this time. I don't remember consistently seeing this many people playing emp for such long periods.

Empires is indee the most original mod I played in the last time. It really has the right feel to it. But I really have to say it comes and goes with the server count. I once had the chance to play eternal silence with some guys. The game was real fun but there are just 2 servers out and they're almost always empty. So a great mod dies by that. So keep the servers up!

 

While the idea behind your post is good, i disagree a little about what causes the problem. I admit i'm just guessing, but i do think i'm right with this.

If servers go away, it often is because interest in the mod has gone away, and only a few local players are online at any given time. Servers can cost a lot of money, and people will stop putting money in them if they have like 20 players/month.

Empires has the advantage of being promoted by the testers rather well. The trailer on gametrailers.com has somewhere around 57,000 views, we've been on steam new, we have helped with making a very nice press release site, and talked about empires on every forum we could think of.
As long as people are playing empires, i think there will be servers. It's keeping the players that will be important.

Let's see how it turns out.
