this isn't a "I WANT THIS DESINE OF MAPP I MAYD IN PAINT MADEINTO A MAP" thread.

i just want to ask mappers; please can we have some more standard, classic type maps. every new map in developement i see seems extreamly complicated, every section trying to be as complicated as an HL2 map, except that map is massive.

yet the best maps i know, such as slaughtered, Mvalley and duststorm, are relatively simple.

    I'd love to see
-3 simple classic style maps which empires does best instead of one massively complicated one
-some smaller, crossroads size commander maps suitable for 5 v 5's and 8 v 8's, so people can enjoy empires at LAN and on smaller servers.

I have difficulty with small maps.

I start by making a box the size of the grid, then fill it.

I don't feel like I'm trying if I work smaller than that.

Yeah Im surprised there arent more maps like duststorm- basically just a single huge area, consisting of one level with some bumpy hills thrown in, some very simple blocky walls that people refer to as a "city" for some reason, but the openness means it has much more varied and exciting gameplay most of the time.

I start to make a duststorm like map in the next weeks.
Think of a duststorm with fortified hills in which the resnodes are...

However Duststorm is a rush normally to the middle, and skilled teams can rocket snipe everything. It also encourages turret spam. It doesn't offer anything for cover.

Canyon may be choke points, but it isn't that bad. There are always two fronts that are attacking. The map also has cover for stuff.

To LordDz, official map wise, I really only think Duststorm sucks.

duststorm: greatest map empires has except smokies. i rarely rarely (one in ten games?) see rocket sniping; it's mostly ineffective now as far as i can tell.

it's actually got so many tactics and things that can happen; just cruizing about in a convoy and attacking a base from a direction they don't expect (something you don't get in most other maps) is a joy.

Do people not like cyclo? I think that that is the best map due to it's 2 main focus points and sieging capabilities. To me if I were to describe a game of empires, I would involve cyclo as the playing field on which the game is dealt.

The middle kills my fps so I try to avoid it and I dont like those starting
    defenses.

Cyclo is another great map, I dont think it is quite as fun or open to possibilities as duststorm so it loses some points, but I think it has the perfect balance of interesting terrain and areas that are buildable for the comm, which is the hardest part of empires mapping. If you put the slightest bump in a displacement it can make a huge area not able to fit a rax, so you have to decide which bits will be totally flat and which bits will have actual terrain. Cyclo has lots of buildable areas but is still very fun and interesting for driving points, so it is probably my favourite map after duststorm.

Duststorm still wins though because you can build in a lot more places, it is great fun to organise tank squads and drive on and theres nothing better than flying through the rivers in a superlight and hopping into the air :)

Dusstorm is a pretty epic map. I think that out of all of the empires maps, duststorm is one of the best. Valley comes close, but has too many choke points.

A lot of the other maps are pretty boring in that you just drop barracks in a tiny designated base area and build up walls around it and keep it repaired while the enemy crowds at the chokepoint and tries to snipe it. There's no way to get in and out of the base other than through that point. Lots of repetitive and tedious game play ensues.
